Weekend Hunt:

Nancy-IL

Well-known member
I've got most of my meager finds put away. But did rescue an 1895 IH, a 49' dog tag, handful of wheat cents and a few misc. items. I'll try to remember to take pictures before I put them away next time. Sorry about that.

This week looks bad for hunting. Highs of 95 and VERY humid. Hope you all get to get out so I can read about your finds and daydream.

What shape was the IH? Nice find, I haven't found anything that old yet. Rob

It is in VG shape. We were hunting near the Mississippi River so the ground was mostly sand w/roots. The color was quite good compared to the green ones we find here in Central IL. I even found a wheat with shiny cooper coloring on it. It's strange how different soils change the colors of the coins.

HH to all!!!

A VG is nice, where were you hunting by the Mississippi? Was it a park, beach ? Rob

It was private property. Larry's dad lives there. We'll have to take another ride up there soon. As soon as it cools down a bit. It's a firecracker here in IL. (like most places this time of year)

nancy, i found a copper point ,eastern arcaic 1000 b.c. in a river bank it had no corosion at all it was in such good shape i thouht it was new it was in the clay in the water never was oxidized also when a coin is in ground that is dry it oxidizes not to mention rain water is acidic 5.5 ph ,. some soils are lime rich wich may nutralize the ground so the coin comes out like new river tend to preserve things well

That's an awesome find! And it amazes me how the different soils and mineralization preserves coins, etc. or just plain deteriorates them. It's a great feeling when you find one so well preserved.

But with hunting near the river, you've got to fight those pesty mosquitoes. They drove us away from some sites that we were hunting.
