Weekend Hunt Finds A Dirty Face:

Nancy-IL

Well-known member
We took our toy hauler (without the big toy) out for the weekend. Only toys on board were the metal detectors :twodetecting:. We camped by the Illinois River at a very nice little campground. Larry had talked to the Park District and they didn't have a problem with us metal detecting. :wiggle: We found a couple of old old sites and hunted off and on Saturday throughout the early hours. The ground was mostly sand, so it was easy digging. Not a lot of older coins, but the main thing is that we had a good time. Saturday night was a different story. I had planned on cooking steaks on the grill by the warm fire, but Mother Nature had different plans. :veryangry: Thundering and raining...just not my cup of tea for cooking outside. So between Larry and I, we lit the pilot light in the oven (Yes, it took two of us to do it), I got my frying pan out and I cooked steaks and baked potatoes inside the camper. Ya, really roughing it...lol. Needless to say, Sunday morning was cold & very windy so we didn't hunt long. But we added more sites to our list for detecting. We'll be going back there again.

My weekend take was $4.04 in clad, two Wheats (1920 - 1937) and a Merc. (1941) with lots of misc. trinkets. I couldn't get that lady's face clean for nothing! It's a terrible stain. Guess it doesn't matter, it's only bullion. I'll card it and put it with my other "keeper" finds. Oh and the 3/4 cent...Is that anything like the half cent? The main thing is that we had a good time trying to find that lost treasure. Next time, I am going to put in a request for better weather while camping and detecting.

Happy late Mother's Day to all the moms out there.
Thanks for looking and HH to all, Nancy

great finds Nancy, sorry about the bad weather I'm glade you still had fun, And I bet those steaks and baked potatoes tasted great too.

Nice finds Nancy. We have a fifth wheel and like to camp during the warmer months. I always have my detector with me. If you don't mind me asking where were you camping on the Illinois? I'm always looking for new places even with the price of diesel. Maybe I'll run into you guys some day. Here's our unit in Texas this winter. Rob

I sent a PM. Rob

DANG!!!!!!
You must have retired with a decent pension to aford all the GAS it takes to pull that 5th wheel around!!!!
I used to have an old Dodge Van I lived in for 6 years while I traveled around. Unfortunately I wasn't into MDing back then.
I'd do it again if I could find a good van with a STANDARD stick and not an automatic!

Very nice fifth wheeler Rob. You can haul a lot of treasures with that. Here's our toy hauler.....Nancy

It isn't cheap but it takes a less fuel (it's a diesel) than my buddies Dodge. Nancy I've seen the toy hauler before . It's a nice setup with your other toy. If you didn't get my PM let me know. Rob

I just love those Mercury dimes. Nice finds Nancy. Ya all save up your money for gas and diesel and come out to Idaho's River of No return (Salmon River) for some Steelhead fishing. I've got the boat for the White Water and when the fishing is off we can MD the old gold camps. HH Dennis in Idaho

Thats the way I hope to see our great country one day. Good Hunting and Traveveling Steelhead!!
Hey Nancy, that bolt and nut item you found in the upper right part of your photo is an electrical cable splice or "split-bolt".
Looks like it might be for 4/0 wire. and worth $13.50 ea. to a contractor new. I work for an electrical wholesaler. By the way,
we buy batteries by the pallet load. I get them far cheaper than the stores. If anyone is interested in saving some money and allowing for postage, I'd be willing to ship to individuals or a group. This is an offer only as a courtesy to fellow MDer's
on this forum. I'm not out to sell for profit, just happy to help out anyone interested. We all know what batteries cost. Anyone please speak up or contact me. I've learned a lot and enjoyed all the chat so I'll give something too.
