Saturday, I was able to get out for an hour before work. I had noticed that the city had totally torn up the pavement and curbing on a section of road in front of the high school. I decided to try my luck and see if I could find anything. However, since the city lays down coal clinkers and other negative hot rocks when they lay new concrete down, the exposed sidewalk beds were nearly undetectable. Usually, I just scan the sides of the dirt where the curb was. I usually get one or two good coins this way. I did manage to find one Wheat, a 1944. This brings my total Wheat's to 990 since I started. 10 more, and I bust a thousand.
Sunday, I was able to escape from work early. I was originally planning on heading to a lake, but talked myself into heading to a park that I was working earlier this spring. The park in question has several low-laying spots that had standing water on them when I was there last a month ago. However, by now, those ought to be dry, and the ground still moist enough to dig. Plus, I was finding some deep, older Wheat's there.
When I walked out of the kitchen where I work, and onto the parking lot, the first thing I hear is the shuddering roar of a helicopter. I looked, and it was on final approach to the airport a few miles away. Great. The Nascar Race is over, and the drivers are shuttling back to the airport to fly out. Can we say TRAFFIC???? I just knew that I-94 would be packed, and in the direction I wanted to go. So, I talked myself into going back to my old "Wheatfield" from three years ago. Back roads all the way, no traffic. I get there, strap all my gear on, and walk to the back of the park where I had recovered some Wheat's and a Merc the last time I was here a few weeks ago. I started working a patter, opposite to the one I originally was working, and sure enough, within a few minutes, I saw this staring at me in the dirt:

All right! Nice, early date, not to much wear on it.
Wouldn't you know it, but it starts raining about right then! I was hoping that it was going to be a brief sprinkle, so I headed for the shelter of a large, old, oak tree. I started a pattern under that tree. I got a hit, an indicated Zinc at 3". I dug it up, expecting a really crusty corroded Wheat, as that's the depth I was finding them the last time, and I'm under an oak tree. Well, I saw a crusty corroded penny all right, but it's no Wheat. Here's what was looking up at me:

At first, I wasn't sure what I had, until I started looking for the date. Then, when I saw the points of the feathers, I realized what I had, so I started brushing off the gunk. I've pulled one other IH penny out of here, last year. This park was built in the 40's. I guess some later IH's were still circulating then.
