Weekend finds

I have been looking for a pickett post on the Saline river for almost 2 years. And I found it Saturday. I found where the picketts guarded the crossing on the river but am still looking for the camp. The silver ring and D-buckle,I think is gonna be close to where the camp was located also found a couple of bullets. The ring looks like a womans wedding ring and is one of my favorite finds so far. The ring makes things a little more personal and puts things into perspective, for me anyway. The long lead objects are fishing sinkers the picketts made by hammering out round pistol balls and rolling them up around their line. There is one sinker that appears to be made from a carved pistol bullet that has had the ends cutoff and a knife blade driven about half way through so the line could be crimped in it. I like it when things start to work out. The big bullet is an Enfield...d2

For some reason carved lead is one of my more favorite things to find....Besides the obvious stuff. Like you said, I love the stuff that is more personal........Aaron

I am an older hunter who at one time did a lot of research and hunting on the saline. I have hunted from Jenkins ferry , Camden, and Elkins ferry. Since then I have moved out of that area to far to hunt. If i can help you, I'd be glad to send you what info I have.

That post should be there close by. Here's something else to consider on "fishing sinkers." I have found them in Cavalry camps, no where near water deep enough to contain fish. My thoughts: Troopers would make "sinkers" to tie on the end of a string. The other end would have an oil cloth tied on. Drop the sinker down the barrel of their breech loading carbine and you have a cleaning/oil rig. CW guns needed constant cleaning and oiling to avoid fouling the barrel and rust. I've also dug glass "Oil" bottles in Camps. They are small, cylindrical bottles, usually aqua in color and have Oil embossed on them. Nice finds d2.

puddlejumper,
Would you happen to know Meigs Brainard..... or would you have known David Perdue...... Rufus T Buie?
Just some other names associated with the Saline.... especially at Mt Elba.
Take Care,
Kim

David, I had not thought of that but being as you mentioned the gun cleaning deal that makes since also being as I did find what looks to be a .44 henry rim fire case but it was found about 300 yards from the river close to where I found the ring...d2
