Weekend colonial pit dig

Went back to the same site that I've been digging in for a while. Thought I was getting close to finishing this site up, but a new hotspot always seems to pop up. Here's my uncleaned finds from a 3 hours dig yesterday:

Here they are after a lengthy clean up:

Some great looking early shards have been coming out of this site. Here's a close-up of some pieces from a westerwald jug. The pic after that shows what it looked like before it was broke. A beautiful piece for sure. Maybe I can get lucky and find enough pieces to glue most of it back together. That'll be my priority next time out.

As usual, a fantastic post Bill! That site just keeps on producing for you, Keep up the good work.

How come there are so many pipe stems found in colonial sites? Did they use them once and throw them away?

Every time they finished smoking a pipe they would break off a bit of stem so they would have a fresh pipe for their next smoke. Sort of like today's cigarette butts. They threw them in a trash bucket that would eventually get thrown in a trash pit. That's what I was told and it makes sence to me.
