Weekend beach find

Found behind the back wall of the local harbour, would have been kicking around down there for 60 or more years, since the Islands were finally liberated from the Germans, a year after mainland europe. Also found a load of unfired rifle rounds, some still lying on the surface!

This is 37mm H.E. Pak gun round, I would have thought German, but possibly english, so I have been told. There was an AA emplacement on the pier here, but that was 20mm. Have not found any rounds for that yet, but will keep looking.

Will be blowing this next week some time

As with all unexpolded ordanence, care is required. It has been in the sea for just over 60 years, just under the sand. As long as you stop it drying out the propellant charge and H.E. head are fairly stable. It is when the compunds start drying out and crystalising that problems could occur. Dont try hitting it with hammers or shoving it in a vise and trying to turn the top of with a pipe wrench!

Later this week the local EOD guy we will be disposing of it with a controlled charge in a disused quarry. Would have like to clean out the HE and propellant but it is just not worth the risk.
