Weekend away.

Went away over the weekend to a favourite camping spot and the weather was just beautiful. I had the 6" DD coil on the 70 and family members were having a good time with the Garrett Ace 250 using the stock coil. We didn't find anything of major value but everyone had a great time. We came across a nice patch at the base of a large tree where alot of bullet shells were dug up.....all Owen machine gun shells by the way and not too far from the same spot we started to unearth some 303 shells all from about 4" to 8" deep. Down near the lakes edge we picked up the usual small sinker or two and even a lure :clapping:. We also found a small pair of pliers. I'm sure there will be alot more in the same area and hopefully some nice trinkets might pop up next time. Before we left camp we hid the finds in a hollowed out log and placed a small animal skull on top to scare the tomb robbers away LOL  The 6" DD coil on the Terra impressed me again with good depth and target separation. The Ace 250 was a hit amongst the family and everyone had a turn to dig up some treasure. Enjoy the photo's.
Cheers!

P.S Here is a link about the Owen machine gun and the different versions that were produced. All the shells we found were 9mm.

Sounds like a great week end Nugget. Sometimes the enjoyment isn't from the finds, but just getting out and having a swing.
Finding the shells from an Owen gun would be rare. How did you figure it out?

Weekend with the family...............Priceless !!!!!

I was told by my uncle who was with us at the time that they could be Owen machine gun shells because of the 9mm size. The Area around us has been a well used training ground for the army so it wouldn't surprise me if hes right about his assumption. Also many 303 rounds were recovered and most of them were very old as they were corroded and brittle. We could be totally off the mark about them being Owen shells but they are very old and seem to have been in the earth for along time not to mention that there are many more of the same targets ID's that we just never dug up because we were detecting them left right and centre. Many other finds have been found in the local area including old war badges, coins and other war relics so it seems logic to me. Anyways I had a ball, especially watching some of my family members who had never detected before, watching there faces as they unearthed each find was priceless for sure. Another intresting link.................................

Mate, a lake in OZ with water in it,and you didnt go fishing? Looks the goods by the picture. I think all the fish down here in Vic have either died or swam away to better water:cry:

Thanks for the link and info.
It sure is good to share the hobby with others. I'm currently working with the local club, to put on a detecting night with the local Scout group in November. Should be a fun night.
I'll be in your fair state next week, but will only be going to the Gold Coast, with a couple of visits to Brisbane.
Mick Evans.

I love night detecting! Its cooler at night and great to do on the beach. I hope you have a great time with the local club and all the best in Brissy and the Goldcoast
Cheers!

Thanks. Looking forward to beach hunting. With the DD coil on, it should do well. I'll be taking all my detectors; otherwise known as weapons of mass detection!
