I managed to sneak off today for a couple hours. I went to a nearby park that I haven't been to in awhile. I pulled an IH Penny out of here three years ago, really shallow.

I was just kind of wandering around, not really working a pattern, just scouting around in areas that I hadn't previously searching, looking for deep targets. Eventually, I ended up under the two trees where I pulled the IH Penny three years ago. This little spot is trash city, as it's a bleacher area for a baseball field. I was pulling shallow pennies and dimes, plus trash, hoping to find something good.

Then, I got a High Coin signal that indicated 4" on my CZ. I dug down, and didn't see it. I checked with my Vibraprobe, and got a signal at about 6 o'clock in the hole. I popped out a divot of dirt, and saw the smooth edge of what I thought was a penny. As I retrieved the coin, I noticed two things: 1) There was dirt caked on both sides, and 2) I had managed to graze the edge, and the scrape wasn't copper, but looked like silver! I removed the dirt from one side of the coin, and saw a most beautiful sight, the words "One Dime" enclosed in a wreath of cornstalks and oak leaves. I was thinking, "Now, do I have a Barber, or Seated?" I was hoping for Seated, as I haven't found a Seated dime yet. I carefully removed the dirt over the obverse side, and saw the bust of Liberty facing right, and knew I had a Barber, a 1906S. I thought it was an '03S, as I couldn't make out the last digit clearly.

When I got home and rinsed it off, I realized I had managed to gouge this dime three times, the graze on the rim, right onto the "6" of the date, and square in the middle of the reverse. I need to work on my pinpointing!

Nice find. Those Barbers are great looking. I've found one (1903). Hard to believe when you pull something like that out of the ground.
