Weather in North/South Carolina/Florida this time of year?

We had planned to leave California Sept. 24th, go to the emerald mine in North Carolina for a few days, then to the coast, going down to South Carolina then around around Florida then back up to Greensboro, North Carolina. However...we now know that it is definitely hurricane season there. We're watching Ike, which seems to be going west to Texas. My questions are...are we completely insane to be even thinking of going there now and what is the weather like, barring hurricanes, this time of year. Does it rain every day?, etc. We really want to try our luck with our Minelabs and are disappointed that the weather might cancel the trip.

Thanks for any advice and help with our planning (or cancellations).

We are at the very peak of hurricane activity and will rapidly drop off from this point on. That's not to say that something could pop up but getting less and less likely. Afternoon showers have slowed considerably and we are now entering a drier period. Not the "set your clock" afternoon showers that we are used to in the summertime. Come on to Fla. and have a great time.
