Weak Pinpointing

LATiger

New member
I'm somewhat new to the V3i. The pinpointing on my machine seems weak. I did a search on this forum for "Weak Pinpointing" and came up with some threads that recommended increasing the All Metal sensitivity to 100, which I've done. However my pinpoint function still seems weak. Even with All Metal turned up to 100, my discriminate mode is still 3-4 inches better in air tests. Its as though the discriminate and all metal sensitivities are opposite of what they should be. What I mean by that is, for example, on my DFX, the all metal mode nearly always gave greater depth than the discriminate mode when both sensitivities were set similarly.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Are there other settings I can change to improve the sensitivity on my All Metal Mode to improve pinpointing?

Should I contact White's Service Center to have this checked out?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

All metal doesn't need to be set to a 100. I've never heard of this. I have mine set to 70 or 75 and that is just for the DX1. All metal should indeed be deeper than Disc. Is this for all the programs? Has it always been this way?

Hey Rob. Thanks for your reply.

Try turning up your All Metal Sensitivity, that controls how deep your pinpointing will go. I have mine set on 100.

The above quote is from about a year ago on this forum. I believe it has always (two months) been this way. I didn't really notice it until I started hitting a couple of deeper targets. And yes it seems to be common to all programs. B.

I know he doesn't run it that high now and he has dug some really deep targets lately. I must be missing something but don't know what it could be. I guess you need to make a call. Again I have never heard of this problem.

I now run my AM Sensitivity at 90 and I do that to get a good solid pinpoint on targets that are sometimes 12 inches deep plus it really puts some punch in the DX-1. I do not recommend others to do as I do because 90 is way to high to pinpoint shallow targets, you can get by with much less. I too think a call to White's service might be in order because AM should be your deepest mode Brian.

I am running my All Matel at 85 to 90. I run it at 85 just about all the time and it work great. :twodetecting::whites::thumbup:

Thanks for the replies Rob, Larry, and Tim. I was kind of hoping maybe I was overlooking something and didn't need to have to send it in. I was doing a little head scratching and manual reading last night and decided to restore all programs to factory settings. All to no avail. I'll call White's and see what they have to say about it. Thanks again, Brian.

What are your volume settings for threshold? Both the program you're using and in the "common" program. What are the target volume settings?

The RX Gain effects A/M which may be why your not getting the depth you think you should. The main purpose of the A/M setting is used in pin pointing. The closer to 100 the deeper it pin points but makes pin pointing shallow targets difficult, and vice versa.
