It's way cool. The cameras are motion activated and because it's digital, it detects pixel movement and records the image starting 2 seconds before the actual motion had started.
Another cool thing is that it has software I can load on my home computer and my traveling lap top providing real time access to all or individual cameras as well as access to the stored / saved images in the hard drive. Now I can be literally anywhere in the world and check out what is ... and what was going on in the store.
We realise the system won't stop shoplifting but are counting on it reducing it somewhat. What the system does do is give us a date / time stamped digital image of every person who may be attempting to complete their transaction with a bad check, stolen check or credit card, counterfeit bill, or flim-flam attempt. It also gives my employees a feeling of security that comes from the "bad boys" knowing to avoid CCTV equipped stores. We also now have a way of proving someone has faked a slip / fall incident.
Another benefit is it will help us improve customer service. If a customer is not being waited on, the register operator can direct one of our sales staff to the aisle to assist the customer.
Should the store be broken into at night, and the perp is still inside when the police arrive (they are normally here in less than 3 minutes when the silent alarm generates a call to the police from the security monitoring service), I can dial in from the parking lot and see where the person is in the store. May help to save a cop or me from getting hurt.
Guess I'll find out if we have mice or rats that the security monitoring system's motion alarm won't pick up but the digital cameras will!
Check out the sign we made up to place around the store and on the monitor the customers can see.
