We just received our new digital security system for the store .....

It's way cool. The cameras are motion activated and because it's digital, it detects pixel movement and records the image starting 2 seconds before the actual motion had started.

Another cool thing is that it has software I can load on my home computer and my traveling lap top providing real time access to all or individual cameras as well as access to the stored / saved images in the hard drive. Now I can be literally anywhere in the world and check out what is ... and what was going on in the store.

We realise the system won't stop shoplifting but are counting on it reducing it somewhat. What the system does do is give us a date / time stamped digital image of every person who may be attempting to complete their transaction with a bad check, stolen check or credit card, counterfeit bill, or flim-flam attempt. It also gives my employees a feeling of security that comes from the "bad boys" knowing to avoid CCTV equipped stores. We also now have a way of proving someone has faked a slip / fall incident.

Another benefit is it will help us improve customer service. If a customer is not being waited on, the register operator can direct one of our sales staff to the aisle to assist the customer.

Should the store be broken into at night, and the perp is still inside when the police arrive (they are normally here in less than 3 minutes when the silent alarm generates a call to the police from the security monitoring service), I can dial in from the parking lot and see where the person is in the store. May help to save a cop or me from getting hurt.

Guess I'll find out if we have mice or rats that the security monitoring system's motion alarm won't pick up but the digital cameras will!

Check out the sign we made up to place around the store and on the monitor the customers can see.

when my brother used to be in security there was a baggage checker that he hated.he would watch him all the time and screw with him as there was a phone right next to the guy.
one day my bro saw the guy pick his nose and eat it.my brother hit the record button and gave a call down to the baggage scrod.in a disguised voice he would say''pick me a winner''or''did it taste good?''then hang up.
the guys would would look all around wondering who could be watching him.the guy wasn't too bright so my brother would do this quite a few times and he never put 2 and 2 together.
ahh cctv's fun for ages 8 to 80.;)im sure you'll think up some good set up's to tape too Ed.your that kinda guy.;):)

... and shortly after he had his system installed he was reviewing some times when he was not in the store. He discovered his daughter and a handsome young male employee about the same age kissing and exploring each others geography.

Another dealer told me he has seen customers do some "mighty weird stuff" to each other when they thought they were not being observed.

That's the reason we will have lots of signs advising customers they are on candid camera.

Anything funny and "fit to print", I'll post on the forum.

Our house is so far back from the road I looked at a similar system for monitoring my driveway. We already have perimiter alarms so we know if anyone enters the driveway, or anywhere else on the property, but it would be nice to see what is going on also. I was amazed at how affordable these type of systems are and will probably install one soon.

I'm sure your system is much more sufisticated as I was pricing a non-recording system... the motion detection-record probably wouldn't be a good thing with horses running all over the place.

.... today the system that used to be close to $30K is less than $9K for 16 indoor / outdoor weatherproof cameras and storage of 30 days of CCTV capture.

There are systems available that allow you to add some hardware boards to an existing computer and a camera or several that cost much less than $1,000 .... Nanny cams / kindagarten-cams / home / office cams, etc.

Cameras can be disguised as clocks, radios, books, etc.

...an unknown crime took place or a "suspect" from another one is in your store.

.... however there are just too many scumbags out to take advantage of everyone else.
