Us old timers come from an age where there was
silver everywhere, beaches,in the water, parks, you would not believe how much there was. There were people
with shovels and sifters of different types and people with metal detectors, everyone was finding
plenty at the old beaches and parks, metal detector sales were booming. You were sure to find rings and silver every time you went out..This was going on everywhere all over the country. I seen 8 people in the water at the same time and a guy with a shovel and sifter, detecting and every one was finding plenty of silver and rings etc.It was so easy to find that some people were using a dredge to pick the stuff up.The stuff was laying on top of one another. We had machines that were very fast and simple to use. They told you, yes or no,or just yes, if you found something,no iffys and maybe.Positive and easy they were.
Suspect people like myself and Rosario got spoiled,it was a ball. Well those days have gone. I feel what Rosario is saying, and I say the same thing, it is much harder to find keepers today, and is it worth it? I say yes. There are thirty years more of trash laying on top of those old sites to wade thru, than there was back then. Could the old detectors find keeper coins in todays conditions? No.
So in comes the Explorer. Can it find the old stuff under all that trash and extra inches of soil? Yes
But at a price to pay. Speed, quanity of finds per hour, more trash, more digging is the price. The
Explorer is an amazing machine and can accomplish what the metal detectors of the past could not. Thatis why it is my-- Primary Detector--without it, I would find NOTHING of value for the time spent hunting.

Good Post John. I guess 20+ yrs is classified as a newcomer. Ok I can live with that. My hunting Partner has 30+ yrs in the field and we always have a good time no matter who finds what or how much of. It is a good clean hobby and nothing you do in this day and age is totally free. Granted the detectors are so much more sofisticated today than they was in the old days. A detector of any worth in the 60s or 70s cost about a weeks wages. Now they are about a week and a half wages. Counting the cost of inflation the US dollar was worth more in that time period than it is today. The Exp. xs is not for everybody. Some just cannot grasp the concept. We understand that. We are here just as you are to learn this fine piece of equipment and to pass on any tips that we might have learned on our own.
My final statement on this is that if the Explorer XS had been here in the 70s we would all be fishermen or Golfers. or in Charles case great Bowlers

in 1984 i paid aus$900.00 for a Detex searchking detector with a 14" coil and 8" coil.In 2000 i paid aus$1400 for an Explorer with accessories, battery pack, headphones and of course the much advanced technology.
I believe it is much better value and only Aus$500 more in 16 years.

Bill:
Thanks for the reply: Your last statement made me think, that at the rate the Explorer is going in
a matter of 5 years from now
there will be NO old coins, etc, left to find on
public land,a depressing thought indeed.
John:

All I can add is get yourself a deeper digger...
Surprising how deep coins go and how new technolgy
allows us to find them...A word of caution do make neat plugs and use a drop rag as it helps the hobby....

John,
This is the same thought we had back in the 70s, 80s, 90s that it would be all gone in a few years from public places. The detectors seem to get more advanced and people learn more about how to use the new features. I think in 10 years we will still see some nice coins being found in public places with the Minelab Explorer XS5B.
