Wayne or anyone gold test question

I read somewhere to check if an item is gold, if you don't want to bother a jeweller right away, all you have to do to check if your find is real gold,
Is very simply use a q-tip dab in some batterer acid and touch your metal.
If real gold it will not show a mark, it does not reveal the karat but that it's worth further tests, any one ever used this method, though modern batteries are sealed. hh oj

ps not show a mark or change in colour? not sure

You can get battery acid at most any hardware store...... But I may be wrong, I thought that nitric acid was a better testing agent than sulfuric acid.. [Wayne almost certainly would know]
