Waxing a Detector?

HaroldILL.

Active member
I was wondering if any of you with the older metal box detectors ever put a coat of wax on it before storage or once a year or so to help protect the paint? I have heard of some waxing there coil also? Thanks.

When i put my water detector away for winter, i use a little cooking oil on a cloth and wipe it down. add a little to the rod locks and it is good till next year. ease to wipe off with hot water. Works for me

Guess it couldn't hurt but I'd be careful to keep the wax residue from working it's way inside the electronics. Those older large metal box detectors back in the day were built like the older vintage cars....built to last and stylish although they were heavier than todays detectors. I still have my original Tesoro Eldorado that I purchased back in the day and seems like I waxed it a couple of times to take out light scuff marks. I need to send it back to Tesoro because now it won't power up....I tried changing coils with and without headphones and even changed the battery pack but it still won't turn on? I'm pretty protective with my detectors and they have always been stored properly in my bedroom closet so I'm guessing some electronic component has gone bad on the board?

Most waxes are petroleum base and can degrade plastic , I use a synthetic spray wax on my coil every time I go out ,helps keep it clean and easy to clean, If you use a wax on the box and buff it off you can create static and the detector can go nuts for awhile , After waxing and buffing take a drier sheet over the box that will take the static out . Just some odd things that may help..
