Waterproofing the Sov

BlackX

New member
Since I'm going to try out an Explorer for a while, I was thinking of waterproofing my Sov for beach/water hunting. I recall seeing photos of someone who looked to have done a nice job doing just that--with a clear controller box--but can't find where I saw it or otherwise locate the info. Anyone know where I might find that info? Or has anyone here done it themselves?

I presume at the least I'll need to build or buy a waterproof controller container and remember from what I'd seen that waterproof connectors are available but can only assume waterproof pots and switches are available as well. Anyone know sources for such? And how is the headphone connector dealt with? (How does it work on the Exal?)

Thanks, Gulf. I'll do that. (Just did a search on his msgs here but didn't find anything about it.)

Max has posted pictures on another forum, Treasure Net. It was a sweet setup and looked very easy to do.

Hey BlackX, I just e-mailed Max, he will get you the information. It's on here somewhere, but its been a while.

That migh have been where I've seen it. I migrated to there from another forum bu have effectively migrated here for the most part. Thx.

Here's mine! All waterproofed GT except for the headphones but it easy enough to swap on a set when I have to. It does require removing some components from the circuit board and replacing them with wateproof types for mounting on the outside of the case. This case is supposingly good to 50 feet but I haven't tested it. For my use in the surf with an occasional dunking it works fine.

Woah--nice!

I don't understand what you mean about the headphones.

If you don't mind, how long did it take you to do the conversion and how much did it cost?

I guess I should have been clearer, the headphone wire where it goes into the box is waterproof but the headphones themselves are not. A lot of the small parts are custom made so that takes some time for fitment. As far as cost I would say under 100 bucks. If you shop on ebay you can save a fortune on the potentiometers and rotary switches if you are lucky enough to find them. I just bought 4 shaft sealed rotary switches for less then the cost of 1 so it pays to look around.

Is there a list somewhere--or do you know--of the actual type and values of the pots and switches?

Looking at this again, it's sinking in how nice that set-up is with the pots moved to where they're accessible. In comparison to where the controls are on a normal Sov when mounted under the cuff, that has to be really nice for land hunting too (where you're more likely to mess with the controls). Thanks again for posting that!

Bling, is that a pic of your detector? how about some details please! Looks great with the controls on the outside, parts list with suppliers would be interesting to have!

Bob, I think I want to go the route you seem to have gone. I really like that set-up! What box did you use? What are the values and tapers of the pots? How did you install that pinpoint switch? Is the coil switchable or do you have one permantly mounted? (If permantently, what coild did you install? I'm thinking of picking up a Sun Ray 12 if I go that route.)

Anything else you can think of that I should know?

Thanks.
