Waterproofing the MXT

Ive recieved so much advice on the forum that I havent been able to come up with any questions on my MXT for about a week. Here you go. I am wondering if there is any product out there that you can use for waterproofing the lcd and all the electronics on the MXT. I dont want to use it underwater, I just mainly want to protect it from the rain so I can metal detect in wet weather. If there isnt That would be a great add on for someone to manufacture. I was thinking of a clear plastic case that could seal with some kind of o ring or gasket around it. One for the lcd that locks around the handle and one that fits around the control box. Ive already missed a few trips because of rain. Boooooo! Dont wanna mess up my MXT. How bout some windshield wipers to keep the case dry . I know theres someone out there that could manufacture it. Does anyone know of an existing product or just have a trick up there sleeve? HH Thanks

Hi Jason,
The MXT is highly resistant to moisture. The control box is gasket sealed. The switches have rubber caps and the knobs have rubber o-rings under the caps. The speaker is a plastic cone speaker which is silicone sealed to the inside of the box. Water going in the speaker holes can't get into the control box. There LCD pod has no problems getting wet.
In other words, I've used mine in the rain all day with no ill effects. If you want, put a large clear plastic bag over the whole control box while operating. Like a bag for a loaf of bread.

Your Whites dealer should have covers for the MXT, mine did.

I've also heard of putting electrical tape over the speaker holes. What do you think of that idea? Would also keep any loose dirt from falling thru the speaker grill when hunting when it's dry out. Bob.

Thanks FatBoy, What do the covers look like? How do they work?

I am glad whites used a plastic speaker cone that was one of my biggest concerns as far as water getting into the MXT. Do you know anything about the covers that Fat Boy mentioned? Thanks HH

They are black vinyl with clear plastic over the controlls.

Clear 2" wide packaging tape would work much better and would be almost invisible.
I will caution you though that if you do this you can forget about using the speakers for any demo purposes. It is amazing how well the tape blocks the sound.
I use the speaker when I work with my grand kids showing them how to use a detector.
An option would be to use a Y phone jack connector and use two sets of headphones.
The world is full of choices. Suit your needs and go for it.

Im going to check w/Alaska Mining and diving next time I talk to them (hey Steve). Maybe I can hook up with some. Thanks Man. HH

is to use Saran Quick Wraps. They can be bought in any grocery store for a few bucks, look kinda like a shower cap and work great. The small blue cover fits the LCD pod great and the pink one fits the control box. I carry these in my pack and they work great. HH Sarge

Lee, thats a good idea. Have you tried removing it and does it do any damage at all to the paint?

Hi Jason.
I do the same thing that John mentioned, but I use clear shower caps that can be bought at a dollar store. Just pull them tight at some spot, and tape them with boxing tape and they stay good and tight.
Another thing you might do is put a Sunray toggle boot cover on the trigger switch. Keeps any debris that could be on your finger from wedging up inside the toggle. You dont even have to remove the existing nut as there is enough thread to accept the toggle. Sunray sells them for Sov toggles but they work on alot of other detectors as well. I also put one on my Detectorpro Uniprobe toggle that I have to use alot when switching from detector to probe.

Jason,
You've gotten a lot of great suggestions for waterproofing the MXT. I'll add one more idea that I finally came up with: I went ahead and bought a Headhunter Wader which has proved to be a wonderful backup land machine to my MXT in wet conditions, and is a dynamite water machine for beach, surf, or lakes. I love my MXT, but it's also great having the versatility of a truly waterproof machine that you can dunk in water without concern, and that won't react at all to high ground mineralization (which is a constant problem in my area) or wet beach sand. Just another idea to consider.
HH,
Dan

Nope, I didn't do it on my MXT. I did do it on my tread mill in my house to cut down the volume of the progaming panel. If I used it while my sweet wife was sleeping I would hear her holler.
I may be dumb but I ain't stupid. I put the tape over the speaker to cut down the volume. No complaints since then.
As I said, I try to spend some time with the grand kids and want all the speaker volume I can get while showing them how to detect. I can tell when they get confused because they tell me they would rather dig than use the detector. (That ain't all bad either.)
Grandma's garden in the spring is the best. Lots of beeps, mostly trash, no worry about bad looking holes. Amazing how many toys and parts of toys and rototiller parts are out there.
