Waterproofing the AT Pro

I received a Garrett AT Pro from my better half this past Christmas. Checking the Serial Number with Garrett, I found that my unit was manufactured in October
2011, an updated model. My wife and I just returned from a vacation on the Island of Antigua. Before detecting in the salt water, I used a silicone grease
manufactured by "Danco, Inc." item number STK 88693 purchased at Loews, on all "O" rings of the Pro. I didn't skimp on the amount and whatever oozed out
after I made the connections, I just wiped off using "Q" tips. Well, I hunted for approximately 3 hours each day for four days. At times, my Pro was laying under
water while I struggled trying to dig with my scoop in the strong currents. I'm happy to report that not one drop of salt water entered my unit and after each hunt, I
washed the complete detector under a fresh water shower. Still no leaks. That silicone grease worked perfectly. Also, a new set of "Energizer Ultimate Lithium"
batteries did not show any power loss after using the detector for the four days. I am totally pleased with my AT Pro. I am not a dealer or work for Garrett. I did
find one large hoop 14K earring, a few Antiguan, US, and a "1" Euro coin, plus about a pound of pull tabs. Had a great time and no problems carrying the detector
in my checked suitcase through customs here or in Antigua. Take care and HH to all.

Good finds! I just got my AT today. I was under the assumption it came from the factory water proof up to 10 feet. Anyone in here able to verify the need to use silicone who has had one for a while in the water?

Some of the early ones leaked. They fixed the problem apparently as I haven't heard of a problem lately.

My first At Pro was a hog for batteries after 8+ hours usage ( serial #151xxxxx ). I brought a newer model recently ( serial # 514xxxxx) and is still on my first set of batteries after 20 hours usage. Seem to perform better than the first one also.

Hi Dave I am glad to hear you had a great time even though the finds were slim. Tell me how did the machine perform for you was my advice helpful? I am curious how the machine fares on the other islands.

Which O rings in particular? the ones for the coil and headphone jacks? I think I will also just to feel better but dont want to grease the wrong things. Today was my first day out and just for a test I check a place I thoroughly with my pioneer 505 and found about 12 clad I missed somehow. Great machine I LOVE IT!

The battery compartment and the cable connections are bulkheaded. The o rings just keep the connectors dry. The battery door seal keeps the batteries dry. The only way the electronics can get soaked is if the seal on the face is bad.

Just a little silicone grease is all you need on the seals.

They come from the factory ready to hit the water. You might want to apply the tiniest bit after awhile. DO NOT glob it on, just a thin film is all it takes. Make sure your don't get it on the plugs themselves, just the o-ring.
