Waterproof head phones

Well-known member
Minelab vs. Greyghost. Anyone used both and how do they compare as far as sound quality and comfort?

I picked up a set of the Gray Ghosts from Ebay. I am happy with them. I can't remember the seller or what I paid for them but they came with the CTX plug attached and had no issues this past summer.

I recently went to a dealer and checked out both sets. I tried both on and listened to the sounds of both. I did not notice any appreciable difference in either one. I'm not saying that there is no difference but in 15 minutes of playing with them....I decided to stick with the ML. The GG are maybe "nicer" looking and maybe a bit more comfortable but I didn't notice much.

Nothing can match the comfort and audio of the Skullies on the CTX, I have used and others have gave me feed back that neither the Gray Ghost UW original, Gray Ghost Amphibians, or Koss Yellows can match UW speakered head phones. The GGUW should give you more comfort then the stock Koss....Audio wise the Koss should have better audio then the GGUW's due to the size of the Piezo elements, Yellow Koss being a 50 mm and the GGUWs being a 27 mm. I sent out a tester set of Gray Ghost Amphibians to a hunter in Jersey, not much feed back from him other then the GGA's did sound better then both the Koss and the GGUW originals, the GGA's use a very well designed Piezo chamber which allows freedom of the 50mm Piezo. Also there are some fine headphone made for the CTX by Mal in England, SurFFones, they are speakered also, and water proof.

Just got my speaker order in...should be a week and I will have the first sets ready...Thanks for asking

Joe,

Im not familiar with what you sell....more info

thanks

JameBondaka, I love it...one of my favorite over the years. Always something extraordinary ....
Skullies are Water proof headphones using the same speakers as Killer bee's, Black widows, SunRay pro Golds, Jolly Rogers, etc..Audiosears 2463, except I go to great lengths to make sure the speaker is water proof. last year I focused on the Excalibur. Now I'm sending out 2 sets to hunters using the CTX....for more testing on a new design. One set is to RichW and the other is Aussiedigger, give them a few months and see what they think...

Joe,

Isnt a water proof speaker....water proof or is there a difference? What do yours cost? Do you advertise?

Thanks JB

There are speakers that are water proof but the quality of the audio is as bad as a Piezo buzzer. And matching up to the detectors output is near impossible, So I took what is already proven and made them water proof. Then I took the very best ambient noise blocking ear muffs, added aviation Gel Pads.
No advertising, I'm not in it for the big cash, I enjoy sharing what works for me and seeing the results when someone experience's what I do...I may make 40 sets this year to sell, then that is it....Because I'm out there hunting in the water once the temps are bearable.

Lets see what Rich and Aussiedigger say, in a month from now....

Price, I'm not sure yet... Last year they were much cheaper then anything out there that was water proof, and that's shipped.

One thing, even thought they are water proof they will not take diving.
Now the new design may, but until proven, not for diving.

IP67 speaker I tried, along with other sizes of piezo's

Joe,

So you use a 50mm? Do these sound better than the koss? When testing is done etc.....let me know Im interested.

thanks
J

Why are they not able to take a dive?

Granted nobody will be diving too far with a CTX, but the Excal was specifically designed for that, right?

Although the Excalibur was design for diving, only about 2% use it to dive. The other 98%, like me use in the water (ruff and calm) chest deep to shallow wet sand. Why not diving? Skullis are yet to be used in that environment, and I do believe the pressure after 10 feet would be way to much. I have had them under 4 feet for 15 minutes and they did fine. I do believe the Piezo's design works better under water, from my test the audio carries better.

The audiosears are 40mm speakers, not piezo's. I will post what Rick and Aussiedigger send me on there on there report...The audio compared to stock koss...And they are by far better then any Piezo buzzer audio, Same speakers as listed above, used in SunRay Pro Golds, Blackwidows, and the big guns of headphones, so they sound just like them. I also offer kobitone500 speakers which are used in the now gone Rat Phones...

Maybe a CTX compare next time around

One of the greatest weakness of headphones, the detector see's the target you just don't hear it, When I can jump in behind another hunter at the ocean and use his dig trail to find targets he's missed then you know you have an advantage. And this is using an Excalibur.

For the CTX? Maybe, Maybe not...we will have to wait and see.

Feedback from
Aussiedigger..

I also have been dying to try my new Skullies headphones by Oldbeechnut Joe all I can say is I was so impressed with them that I did not even bother trying my new Gray Ghost Amphibian headphones even though I wanted too as I modified them with new Gel ear cuff's so they remain never used at this point.

I just got started with my new CTX 3030 in Grand Cayman last week. Hunted the dry sand with the wireless Koss and enjoyed acceptable audio. However when I switched over to the waterproof Gray Ghosts and got into the water, I could not obtain a threshold. Anybody else experiencing this, or is it just me?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The Gray Ghost original have a very low audio..I got this from a friend and I told him sell them and get something better..

Hi Jo
got the new fitting connected today and tried the GGUW and Mal,s surfones
and have to say the GGUW are pretty much useless compared to Mal,s
i have very poor hearing and when the GGUW where connected i couldn't hear the threshold on the Excal with the volume on max
i then tried the GGUW on the CTX and again was struggling to hear the threshold so unless there is some way to improve the volume they will have to go
if there is any way to improve the volume please let me know

Well................ what would be better? I believe a correct threshold is paramount to obtaining maximum depth.

You have to turn threshold level up really high. Press and hold volume button to adjust threshold level, pich etc.

I have a set of GGUW for the CTX. I don't like them. Just way to bassy for me. Now the sunray pro golds I use for land is good quality sound, a lot more trebbley for my hearing than the GGs. Hey there OldBeechnut, Id love to get one of those skullies from you whenever you get the time to build some more. Thanks, Steve

Thanks Steve, they are coming buddy, I will make sure you have a set soon. Maybe you can fill in the blanks along with a few others.....thanks Joe
