Waterproof Explorer

Charles (Upstate NY)

Here are some pics of the waterproof housing I'm making for my Explorer. I have built a couple of the Otterbox type conversions but just don't like them. They are bulky and you have this coil wire hanging out there in the breeze. I wanted the control box on the shaft although balanced better than the stock configuration. This will be going on an ultra-light Whites S-shaft.

Here you can see the housing bulkhead machined out of billet aluminum. The rear and front of the housing will bolt to this.

Here's another shot...

Here's the rear housing vacuum formed in Lexan with an aluminum clamping ring.

Here's a side view. Stay tuned!

Hi Charles,

I see you have been busy since your visit with Bernie. Are you going to use a flexible membrane of some sort to access the controls? I just love seeing your creations!

Bob

Charles,

Beautiful job. I sense some collaboration with Beachcomber?? Do you own all the necessary equipment to mill the housing and form the lexan?

Carl

Yes Beachcomber and I have been batting ideas back and forth on this one. It was his idea to use the lexan with a flat flange, wasn't sure I could vacuum for that but it worked out really well. Yes I have a cnc mill in my home shop plus two vacuum forming machines so its all home shop built. The cad/cam software I have helps a lot.

Hi Bob,

Thanks Bob! I'm using a sheet of "clear" silicone for the front, .060 thick. Seemed like a perfect solution, great in saltwater, flex is 200-300%, relatively clear, yet its thick and rugged and does double duty as the front housing seal. I'm probably going to use a gasket made from this on the back also, should seal it up nice and tight.
