Water scoop???

bulletman

Well-known member
O.K. people, I now have an Excal. Need to know about water scoops. What brands are tough? What size (5 inch, 6 inch)??? Best bang for the buck? I have been looking on Reilly's Treasured Gold?

Thanks

Bulletman

You will find that a lot of guys have more than one scoop. If your digging in wet sand that is not full of rocks and shells an aluminum long handled scoop will work well. If you have areas that are rocky and full of shells it is more difficult to dig in and I would recommend a stainless steel scoop or aluminum with a stainless lip. Travis Nuttall makes the highest quality scoop I have ever used and will dig to China, it is heavy but will last for years and get the job done.

Reilly's makes very good scoops and you can't go wrong with them. Don't scimp on a scoop, spend the money the first time and get the best for your money or you will be disappointed and it will lead to purchasing a better one.

and get a big one for the water i tried my 5"in knees keep water and had some trouble i'm new to water hunting as well

If you are looking for an awesome scoop, then I would recommend the Beach Brute scoop. At a little over 8 inches wide, it can cut your scooping time in half and it helped me find my underwater finds in one or two scoops instead of 5 or 6.

The only problem with the Beach Brute is that it takes a lot of sand or mud into its huge gaping scoop and it gets a bit heavy when all that sand or mud is in it. But after a while, you will find your arms get used to it. I had to modify mine so I added a stainless lip and also replaced the screws with bolts.

I was getting really frustrated while water hunting as I was scooping and scooping with smaller lesser scoops and I was looking for an answer. After getting the Brute, water hunting and beach hunting became a lot of fun.

Get the biggest scoop your arms can handle.

Just my ten cents here...I would recommend a scoop based on your location. I usually carry a couple with me. If I am in an area where I am not going to be too deep or I know I am going to be digging a ton of targets (like a place with lots of coin, lead, foil) I will bring a small Aluminum scoop with me. If I am going out into deep water where it is harder to use a small handled scoop, I will bring along a long handled SS or Aluminum with SS lip scoop. You will find over time, that scoops are like hammers, and that you need the right tool for the right job. If I had to pick one scoop, I would choose a long handled aluminum with a SS lip. That keeps the weight down while still allowing you to get in and dig, through hard bottom, while your up to your chin in the water. If you go aluminum make sure you buy a high quality like Babbs. You may have to ask some of the manufacturers for a longer handle when ordering.

Excellent info from all of you. I never knew anything about the Nuttall scoops. Really looks like a strong scoop. Question - is that the 40 inch handle or the 48 inch one?

I got the pro stock scoop 9 1/2' wide bill, kitchen grade stainless steel scoop with 1/4" square holes throughout. You will need the smaller holes if you are hunting in water and it removes a lot of sand in one scoop. Put on a wheelborrow handle on it and good to go. Check it out it is a great scoop. Marty

I have used the 40 and the 48 inch Nuttall. I like the 48 myself. But then I like to get out after the deep stuff.

I like my diamond head for the "sand" we have here. Wet cement with broken shells or thick heavy black mud. It is super strong and cuts through the hard stuff well. I would suggest looking at the "Diablo" scoop ( I'd like to try one).
I think it's best to shell out the dough for a good scoop because digging sand all day is hard work.

Just a short time ago I started using an 8 inch Stealth Scoop. Seems to work well in and out of the water and doesn't mind gravely sand and smallish rocks. Built like a tank and like having a front end loader on the end of your arm. You can buy a handle with it or just get the scoop and fit your own handle.

I think that the 08 scoop is a fantastic looking scoop but unfortunately the company that makes them... Isn't. At least not until May!

Its tough & gets the small stuff.

I've heard that they are making an adjustable angle handle that will retrofit to all of the rev c. scoops (large ones). So you can put the handle at several angles from 90 degree's (straight up) to about 30 degree's back from straigh up in 10 degree increments. This will also make it so the whole back of the scoop is the push pad instead of the current attached ft. brkt.

+1 on the 48" Nuttall. I also have a RTG dry sand scoop and a 5" aluminum scoop. Depends on my mood and conditions I plan to hunt.

Steve, can you send me any info on this attachment? I have this scoop also and would love to get it to angle. I've been to their web site and nothing is mentioned. Tom
