Water Rookie Needs Help!

 I have been detecting on land since 1989 but I decided recently that I would try water detecting. My detector picks up coins, silver, and large gold rings just fine. Heres my questions for all you guys that are more experienced at this. Are there any underwater units that can pick up small gold chains? And small thin gold earrings? My unit seems to ignore them.:( I have talked to other people who say that this is common. What is your experience at this? One guy said that a Fisher tech told him that even their units have a difficult time picking up small, thin gold and chains. Also I have to run at zero discrimination and maximum sensitivity to get any real depth. I have a good machine ( I will keep the brand a secret) but the unit originally sold for $800.00 ( got mine used and paid a lot less). All replies will be read. Thanks and Happy Hunting!:detecting:

 Ok...Ok...Its a Whites Beach Hunter...just didnt want to make any particular companys detector sound bad. Its a great machine, just doesnt pick up small gold chains real well.:nopity:

Do what I did.

Take a piece of small gold jewelry into a detector shop and ask to see which machines can detect it.

Be prepared for a shock.

Tesoro's are about the only water machines that are good on small gold. However they are not as deep as other makes, then again, neither is your smaller gold.

... while not the deepest seeking machine available, it does great for the price, new or used.

What I've found is to listen for when the threshold tone nulls out (goes away), look at the LED lights. If the red light flickers, walk away, it's small or deep iron. If the yellow light flickers, dig it. It's likely to be a hair pin, plated fish hook, .... or extra small, extra deep gold. I've found a few tiny gold chains by digging the yellow light nulls. Hope that helps.

I HUNT WITH GUYS WHO USE EXPLORER AND EXP II. I HAVE HUNTED ALONG SIDE MANY EXCALS. DON'T SEE THEM GETTING STUFF DEEPER THAN ME. THESE 3 DETECTORS SEEM TO HAVE = DEPTH ON THE BEACH WHEN SET UP RIGHT.

RUN THE THRESH HOLD LOUD TOO THIS WILL GIVE YOU BETTER CHANCE TO PICK DEEPER TARGETS.HERES HOW I RUN MY BEACH HUNTER..... SENS ABOUT MAX...GROUND BAL 1/2 WAY OR LESS FOR NE. BEACHES....SWITCH IN ALL METAL....THRESH HOLD LOUD!!!...AND MOVE SLOW IN WATER/WET SAND!!! YOU'LL START TO GET LITTLE GOLD ITEMS AND BETTER DEPTH/VERY GOOD DEPTH

.... nor have I been able to run sensitivity much higher than a smidge higher than suggested factory setting. I was getting too many false signals. I'll try what you said for settings in all metal and give it a spin. Thanks.

:shrug:Hey Rookie, If you are going to keep your machine a secret then I will keep my technical information a secret also. Yes, there are machines that pull the small gold stuff but which machines is a secret.:nono:

If there is a diamond pendant then just about any good machjine will find it.

I doubt that any and all detectors would find these solitaire diamond pendants. I respect your knowledge and experience Goldringer but take it easy on us lesser mortals.[attachment 29396 hero_byo_bridgepage_BYOP_275x200.jpg][attachment 29397 Pendant_40_8.jpg]

Well, i had to read lots to find it. I like to share information and really do not keep secrets. I found it a little strange for Rookie to ask for our informantion but not wanting to give his basic set-up. I personally would never ask for help if I were not willing to reciprocate. It was all in fun though.

AS MUCH AS POSS..IT ONLY TOOK ME 6MOS TO FIND OUT THIS TRICK!! TO THINK OF ALL THE DEEP TARGETS I MUST OF MISSED!! HOPE I WAS HELPFULL TO YA GOOD LUCK!!!
