water pipe, zero versus all metal

I was out in my yard yesterday afternoon and got a strong signal and when I pinpointed it showed up as an E target, filling my head with dreams of a cache.
However, it was an iron pipe, rusted and ran from the old well location to the edge of the front yard. I was surprised that it registered as an E target, thinking that it would have to be a larger piece of metal to do so.
I noticed that using the zero setting instead of all metal really speeded things up for me and then I switched to coins mode to double check for coins. However, I dug almost everything over 2 on the gta scale anyway. part of my learning curve.
