Water in the Control box of the At Pro

My At Pro got water in the unit at a depth of 9ft. My friend and I were hookah diving in a boat slip looking for a class ring. We measured the depth before we went down and were diving for about one hour.
I got home and first noticed the water in the unit. Turned it on and the target markers went berserk and then finally no response at all.
Called Garrett in Texas and they said to send it in along with the coil. The control box was beyond the warranty. Got a call from Garrett(Hilda) and she said the unit was fixed with a number of repair items such as
a new mother board, new speaker, new ports for the coil and headphones and some other smaller items. Even looks like a new case for the control box but the serial number is the same as the old one. She said the
coil was "out of range" and needed to be replaced, this was under warranty so they gave me a new coil at no cost. Total cost to me was $145. and I was expecting a lot more. Total down time was 13 days from the day
I shipped it to when it came back to me. I could not be happier with the service I received from Garrett!!
My friend has the same detector and had no problems with his unit. He does have a strip of electrical tape around the edge of the control box and the screen for added insurance. My advice is to keep an eye on the gap
between the black housing and the front screen and make sure this space is tight-this may have been the problem.

Friggineh! :surprised: Great report!...Awesome job Garrett! :please::clapping:

Although, all that really matters is, Didja find the ring, and was there a paid bounty on it?

I've heard nothing but good things about their customer service. Gives me a pretty good piece of mind.
And yeah...did ya find the ring?

Did not find the ring. Going back again when the sun is shining bright(was a cloudy day) so we can see better under the water.
Also, somebody dropped a whole box of fishing wts right in the area the ring is suppose to be. Will have to use
our bare hands to feel around and find this ring in about 6 inches of muck.

I gotta ask, if the detector failed at 9' when it's rated to 10' why did you have to pay a dime? I mean I trust these ratings and if the machine doesn't live up to advertised depth I see that as a fault if the manufacture. Now I love Garret, and they have always been more than fair to me, but did you explained it failed at the measured 9' depth to them and if so what was their reasoning for charging you for the repairs? Thanks

I am not an attorney but if I read the warranty its says nothing other than the 2 year period.
It makes good business sense on the part of Garrett and maybe that is why they are still in business.
I bought the thing knowing it had a 2 year warranty and I can live with that. I sure missed it for those 13 days though!!!
If you break down those 13 days, 3 to 4 days by mail each way, 2 weekends in the middle of this period, they turned this thing around fast for me.

The way I understand him it was out of warranty, but a depth rating should not expire when a warranty does, if that were ok we'd have dead divers filling the oceans! If it failed at 9 feet when it's rated to 10' I think that something was not right with the detector. I'm sorry but equipment is purchased and used based on the specs and if the specs are only good during the warranty period that just is not right. Again, I only know what I've read from his posts about it so their could be more to it and Garrett has always been absolutely wonderful to me, that's what puzzles me as if the exact same thing happened to mine I would be surprised if Garrett did anything but repair it for nothing more than shipping costs.

The original At Pro was purchased 3 1/2 years ago. The coil that I sent back with the control box was purchased 13 months ago. Because the control box was over 2 yrs. old, they repaired it and charged me. The coil was still under
the two year warranty and it was defective so they gave me a new one at no cost.

It sounds like you came out OK.
It's cheaper than buying a new detector.
Did they say where the leak was coming
from?

The connectors for the coil and headphones were dry and the battery compartment was dry. Had to leak around the edge of the screen. You could see moisture on the inside of the screen.

My AT Pro S--t the bed this afternoon while detecting in about 3 feet of water. It just started beeping non-stop. I took the control box off the shaft expecting that I'd have to ship it to Texas but after talking to Garrett they asked me if I had done a Factory reset. I said "No" but after learning how, tried it out and it seems to have fixed the problem.
Here's how you do it for those who don't know:
Turn the machine on.
Press and hold the on/off (mode) switch until you hear two beeps. That's it.

I think Garrett did well with you. Enjoy the machine, it could have been much worse. Fast turn around and sounds like a fair price on the repairs done!

If it does it again take the coil cover off and make sure there's not a lot of sand and stuff trapped inside. Sometimes that will cause it to do that, also make sure your batteries are good, try a brand new set and see if it still does it if all the other suggestions fail. Good luck.

Another case of water in an At Pro-he popped the front screen off the black housing and dried the thing out with a hot air gun. Used his finger nails to pull the front screen off-no screws holding it. It has an 0-ring in there between
the black housing and the screen unit. Another source of a leak could be in the speaker on the bottom of the control box.
He saved the unit by doing this right away.
