My Excalibur got salt water in it today not much water but it got on the borads how do i dry it up be for it dose any damage to it ? I pulled it apart and can see water on the circuit boards?
Thanks for any help

First of all I hope that you disconnected the battery and when you say you pulled it apart did you remove it from the tube or just remove the end caps. This is a judgement call, if it were mine I would remove it from the tube blow out any remaining drops of water with compressed air especially under the ICs. Depending on how much water got in determines the next step. Lots of water I would rinse the PCBs with distilled water and use a hair dryer to completely dry it out. Small amount of water I would just try and dry it. Either way nothing is guaranteed.

Flush good with distilled water and make sure it's completely dry before sealing, saltwater will destroy what it touches. Hope everything works out ok. John

This guy sent me his unit to do a mod and he didn't even know that his detector had leaked sometime in the past. You can see the corrosion around the pads and circuit traces, they are the fuzzy white crystal areas. I had to use denatured alcohol to clean the board up.

Thanks for the replies the excalibur is the old one with the horseshoe coil red headphones but did replace the coil with a 10" coil. Yes I did remove it from the tube and could see small drops of water here and there on the circuit boards. I did as suggested and used distilled water and a hair dryer to dry it and put it back together used silicon grease on the seals it seems to be working ok. I will need to keep a close eye on it. Still like to know how water got in there maybe I should replace the o rings.
Thank for the help.

Mel, Great pic's of what to look for on the effects of saltwater.........Question, Black wire off of the ZL CAPACITOR, and was it leaking from the PP/DISC switch or the end cap.

The black wire was put there by Minelab and went to the shielded braid on the headphones. I don't know where or how the unit leaked. It didn't leak after I put it back together.

Went down to try the Excalibur out everything was alright for about a hour then it went nuts got water in it again. Not happy jan. I did find a 9ct gold ring before it died so not a complete disaster. I don't need this to happen again so this time I have unsoldered the coil wires and power wires from the boards and put the ends back with out the circuit boards so i can test it to find out where the water is coming in. I have it in the pool with a lead weight on it hope it leaks so i can fix it.

Which older Excal do you have? The first ones (no red pointer on the knobs) had the "O" rings on the shaft and the second generation (red pointer on the knobs) had the "O" rings in the housing. The second generation is a much improved design because the shaft bushings are larger and the knobs don't tend to wobble as much. Good luck on your leak test.

To get the shaft out you press the shaft from the outside of the tube and force it into the tube. You do this with all five controls. Since you said Gday I take it that your not in the U.S. Try Minelab or auto parts stores or your local hardware store.

Good news got the o rings today from suals bearing supplies only $8.00. They were very patient trying to get the right ones. They even fitted one shaft to make sure it fitted right. Water tested it in the pool and no leaks. If any one else has to do this make sure you remove the top o ring first and the shaft will side right out easily. Can
