John, what model Tesoro is this? How old? I feel quite sure Tesoro would replace that coil free of charge if there has been no abuse involved. At the very least they would retune and re-seal it for you.
Good Luck, Jerry

The water was probably just coming out from the coil cover. Thats no biggy. It is also normal to see the black epoxy filling that is exposed without the coil cover. Now if you can actually see the windings, I'd be concerned. Or, if you can see cracks in the epoxy or gaps between the epoxy and the plastic housing. The cover can get dirt in it to cause falsing, but it would have to be fairly mineralized soil, and quite a lot of it for it to happen. Are you sure the falsing that you are seeing is from that, or an improperly GB'ed detector or the GB set too negative on a preset detector?

Some guys do silicon their covers to the coils, but I personally do not do that. Unless you lay a perfect bead, there could be a pin hole opening and water and dirt will still get in there. If you do decide to do that be sure you use the kind of silicon that stays pliable so you can remove the cover easily if have to. Water will collect in unsealed coil covers, thats normal and should not affect your coil. You should get in the habit of periodically removing the cover to clean out any dirt that may be in there. In some cases, mineralize dirt can affect your machines operation so keep that in mind. Unless you live and hunt in mineralized soil areas, you will probably not have a problem.

Exactly what machine and coil are do you have? Current Tesoro coil models are solid and epoxy-filled, but some of the older models were "hollow" of sorts. These older coils will take water in if they develop a crack but normally that will short out the coil instantly and the machine will not work properly.

The new tesoro coils are a plastic shell, open on the bottom, and the windings are filled over with a black epoxy. Available for that is a plastic snap-on "scuff plate", or coil cover. These just slip on and they are held on by friction. This type of coil it is virtually impossible to get water "inside" because it is a solid mass of epoxy. Tesoro has a life time warranty, you should send the coil in for them to look at.

That is the coil scuff protection cover. All you need to do, is at the end of each hunt, take the cover off and clean the cover and the coil.

I've had three Tesoro coils that seperated at the factory seam. All three were the 10.5" white open center coils for the older models. The first two I sent in to Tesoro and they repaired them for free. The last one I repaired myself. If you don't get all the moisture out befoe you reseal it you will have static & bad falsing.. It's best just to send it on in to Tesoro..... Dave

Hey John.....is this your new Vaquero? Are you talking about the coil cover? Talk to me my friend, you didn't mention it to me on the phone the other night?

hi chuck its the new one. i dont have a coil cover this. it is the coil itself. you can see the black epoxy or what ever in the coil. still works ok. i was just worried about getting this minilized soil in it and having it falsing.

:detecting:John....the "black epoxy" you are seeing is the way the newer Tesoro coils are made. Put the coil cover that came with it on, so you don't wear the bottom of the coil. It's much cheaper to replace the cover than the coil! It's easy enough at the end of the day's hunt, to remove the cover and wash the inside of it and the bottom of the coil off, dry it out and put it back on for the next hunt. That's what I do with my Vaquero and my Tejon, every evening after each day's hunt.:tesoro::cheers:

hey chuck i got it figured out. i'm use to the other coils sealed and put a skid plate on em. but ya the cover does come of so its a skid plate. i just thought it was part of the coil that was suppose to be sealed.
