Water hunting coils?

Sand Scoop

New member
I may need to change out my coil on the Excal II. It runs fine on the wet sand but as soon as I hit the water I'm starting to get a lot of falsing, seems more than I use to.It has been very rough where I detect and I know I will get falsing from wash around the coil but it seems more than usual.I've tried setting the sensitivity to different settings which doesn't help.
I would like some feedback from anyone that has used the S-12 for water hunting and where I might be able to have one hardwired.I'm also like getting the GrayGhost headphones installed at the same time. Any help appreciated, Thanks,Dick

You probably have, but have you checked for debris under the coil cover? A cheaper alternative is the marine epoxy if it isnt too late. HH Joe

I am using the marine epoxy.I put on 3 or 4 coats and its works real well. I sent it in to Minelab to have the cable repaired, they cut off about 3". Seems like now the coil is more sensitive than before.

iv owned many coils and found for me the S12" and the WOT 15" to be great coils, just a little too big in the water for me.big coils have a lot of resistance under water and hard to pin point.about 30 minuits and my old 61 year old shoulder is shot.i like the S8 under water better, but if you are young and have good arms, the S12 is hard to beat! its much lighter than the WOT and just as deep.

Yes,I get the battery under water.I've greased that real well to keep the salt water from getting around the contacts..Acually I don't get as much falsing in the deeper water when the battery pac is submerged .Most of the noise I get I'm in about 2-3 feet and the waves are really blasting the beach and I expect to get some. I get less falsing with my GT in 1-2 foot of water. I did get noise before but it seem more than before in the Excal..I thought it might be the Marine Epoxy but its the same I us on my GT with no problems..Thanks for helping...
