Water Detectors

A little advice from you water fellows I have been detecting for about 20 years all land I’m wanting to start with some beach and lake detecting what would be a good machine for salt and fresh water I don’t want to spend a lot I will still do land most of the time no under water just waist deep

Everyone's "a lot' will vary, but I'll start the discussion with a detector that Ive never swung- the Equinox 800.

Some detectors will work well in Fresh Water. But the selection that will work well in salt water is limited and they command a higher price. The new Equinox is among the cheaper detectors that will work well in salt water. The mineralization of the salt water makes it very difficult to almost inpossible for most machines.

For salt water beach hunting the 600 will do everything the 800 will do. The 800 has more a few bells and whistles along with gold nugget hunting capabilities. Bells and whistles are not needed on a beach. Dig it all.

if I can chime in,,,,,,, is the equinox fully submergible?

with a second question I'm looking for a water unit same as Ken49 and I'm asking a lot of dealers about ATPros they have forsale and my question is "do you test the unit for leaks before selling" because it IS stated to be submersible. NONE of them do and tell me I should send it back to garret and have them test it! so I won't ever buy a used AT anything now,, my question to you guys is there any brands or models out there that are very reliable in the used market and have a reputation to NOT leak?

I'm Just wondering if I really have to buy brand new for a water unit,,, my budget is 1500.00 but because I only want it for a specialty application which is deep fresh water swimming areas I really don't want to dump a lot of money (I do live 1 mile from Plymouth rock so maybe salt water ) our local MD store in Rockland, Mass where i can check out units in person is not open on the weekends so I can't make it there because of work. will need to order thru the mail sight unseen and this is a one shot deal.

The AT Pro is only waterproof to 10 feet. It will work great in fresh water but not so great in or around salt water. There are not many detectors that are capable of being submerged to a deep depth.

If salt water hunting is on your radar get a multi frequency machine. The Equinox is a good choice because it is new and has a future. It has the capabilities of updates. The Multi Kruzer has multiple frequencies but only uses one at a time. For a single frequency machine it will handle salt water very well. Nokta/Marko has done something remarkable with their units to be able to do that. The down side of them might be political. They are in Turkey and who really knows the future there? I have the 600. A nice machine. Any new water detector will have the guarantee against leaks. Never buy a used one from a stranger is my advice. Especially one out of warranty or no transferable warranty. With your budget go new. Why take a chance? Do your research and make a choice. Contact a forum sponsor by phone for the best deal. What you negotiate is between the two of you.

If you are talking DEEP water....... how deep? If its over 10 feet you are limited ......like he said to an Xcal and CZ. BUT...... if you stay in the 10 feet range the 600 is the best choice currently and IMO is pretty easy to learn even compared to the AT. Its not the bells that boosted the price of the 800....... its that costly WM wireless hookup. The 600 offers a screen, its light, its MUCH faster than the Xcal or CZ, you can change coils and headphones, its a true multi use machine, and for wading about 3' deep you can get a cheap pair of ear buds for wireless hunting or do the waterproof jack yourself. You also have the ability to turn OFF the salt setting ....... not so on the Xcal and CZ and with no screen they just arent the best choice for dirt hunting...... or even dry sand hunting at twice the price. The Nox offers a 3 year warranty....... Xcal 1 year.

I’m still on the fence about the detector I will only use in 3 to 4 feet of water I’m thinking at pro that would be good with fresh water but not sure how it will work in saltwater

The AT-Pro is a great machine but it is not that good in or around salt water. Most single frequency machines struggle to work in salt water due to the mineralization. I do not hesitate to detect behind single frequency machines when I detect the beach.

Hunted the AT Pro since it was first introduced. Great coin separation. Iron Audio a huge help on the beach. Excellent fresh water machine. Gets chatty in most salt water. If you think your salt water areas hold gold get a salt water machine. Couple or three rings will take the sting out of the price. There are some nice Pulse Induction machines that won't wreck your budget.

if you plan on hunting any salt water, stay away from the single frequency detectors .they just have way too much chatter and very little depth on salt sand.i here the Equinox 600 and 800 are pretty hot right now.only water proof to 10'

ANY machine CAN leak..... especially those you open the battery box on. Even the Nox has had some screen leaks. Old watch maker once told me....... i dont care how much you spend on a WATERPROOF water...... theres no such thing as waterproof. ANY who buys a water machine ..... especially salt water will have some repairs more so than dirt machines....... plan for it. The rewards thou are greater and most water machines will pay for themselves quickly if used. A multi freq machine is required for salt water hunting........but id like a light machine, fast, with a TID screen for dirt hunting.......the 600 fits that bill at a very reasonable price. Because they are new and have a 3 year warranty..... more than most salt water machines a used one is a no brainer....... ML has been very generous with fixing them when needed. AND....... no battery box to open.
