Water Detector Enq

Hi All well ive changed my mind again Im not going to get the Ace 250 now.Ive decided a water detector is the go since i do alot of beach hunting anyway, also have my dive license. So this will be a new experience to me.
Ive decided on a 2nd hand detector our local dealer in Melb Aus has a Whites PI 1000 for $600 Aus.
Does anyone know or have used the Whites PI machine, comes with 10" stock coil as new condition.
Would it be worth getting? Dealer says its about 4-5 years old,can someone clarify this please?
Its time i got my feet wet again !!!
Dont get me wrong im still keeping my GTAX 1000 for land use.
Cheers Freddy

PI machines are hell in fresh water, as they pick up everything! That's good if you have the time and patience to dig all. Also, they are very deep. You will get extra-ordinary depth, and should get some nice finds, however you will be digging lots of junk. Also, the discrimination capabilities is very poor on PI machines overall. A non-PI VLF will allow you to discriminate some of the junk, but you will miss out on the really deep stuff. And then there are the multi-frequency machines.
Freddy, keep asking questions. You should hold off for a while buying and do some thinking. There are a lot of choices out there. Remember, it's going to take quite a few hours to get over the learning curve for what ever machine you purchase. Because this is a Garrett Forum, I won't get into a discussion on other name brands. But do check them all out. I also water hunt somewhat, but in freshwater only. Good luck with whatever you end up buying.

Hey Freddy, I have tried out the Whites PI 1000 I only used it twice so I can't tell you too much. I liked it OK better than most Whites water detectors. A PI detector is best for detecting at Beaches and salt water. If you will be detecting at lakes and fresh water you might want to check into a VLF water detector. I mainly use a Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II PI and I love it! I use it in fresh water too. I use it in the surf and on the beach mostly. I have friends that use this detector for SUBA diving and they love it and have found many nice things with their Sea Hunter. But you do dig a lot of nails and trash that you won't dig with a VLF water detector. I have used the Fisher 1280-x but I don't like it on the salt water beaches. Just be careful when you make your choice and see if your dealer will rent the detector to you for a trial run to even see if you like it. I have bought used water detectors before just because that is what the dealer had in stock and later I regreted not taking my time to explore my options. Keep us posted on what you decide. Best of Luck!

Hey Freddy, I still have my WHITES PI-1000 Underwater Metal Detector, and I bought mine used in 1982 for $250 U.S. It is older technology, and I would not recommend it because of that reason. There are numerous very good water machines out there. Go to the FINDMALL Beach Forum, or the Sovereign-Excalibur Forum in the Findmall Forum Index. But, thoroughly INVESTIGATE BEFORE YOU BUY!
Good Luck, NamVetLesTreasureSeeker

Headhunter diver.
If so, what do you think? I imagine the discrimination should be much better than a PI, but does it handle salt water really well?
Looks like a no nonsense light easy to use alternative.

Check out the Detectorpro Forum on this website!! I use one.
