Watch Fob or a Medal Hanger?

Tony N (Michigan)

Here is a picture of the fob and the 1800's medal I found in the same back yard with my Explorer SE Pro this morning.
Everything in this back yard is really difficult to eek out due to all the trash in the ground.
If anyone knows what the bar is for on the back of this fob, I'd like to know. Never saw one like it. Maybe a ribbon hung from it to hold a medal?
Here is the back of the canon medal with the loop.

Not sure what it is? Looks like two very nice finds though!

To me, it looks more like a sash buckle than a fob. Very nice finds!

Tony, with the second bar across the back, it looks like s type of buckle or suspender buckle??? Usually watch fobs are flat and solid.
Just my opinion, of course.
Ptob some more goodies out there to be found.
Im going back today to a spot that I recently found some real nice finds, been hunted by another guy for a couple years, so partly discouraging.
Good luck!

The SV medal is a Sons of Veterans (Civil War) medal. It reads "Gratia Dei Servatus MDCCCLXXXI" (1881). The medal originally had a metal bar that attached to your coat. From the bar hung a ribbon; from the ribbon hung the part you found. The Sons of Veterans organization is now know as the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW).

Cool finds; congrats.

No idea either but I love finding items like those. To me they are great finds! Part of our great history.

It was nice you lived up to your end of the bargain. I never make any agreements with anyone, but that's just me. Sometimes I do offer
them some of my finds but country folk are usually pretty chilled out and say "No, you keep it."

Nice find Tony. I have no idea, but it's the kind of stuff I get a kick out of when I find it! Nice one! HH ALL

Yes, it is always neat to find pieces of history of a quieter time when people didn't have radios, TV's or cell phones, computers, etc. etc.

Thanks bud! It's amazing how much junk is in the back yard of this old home and it is equally amazing to be able to find any good thing in it. Just gotta take it low and slow.
I guess before they had trash pickup in the 1800's they just tossed stuff in the back yard?
