'' Was Tould To Get Off Property Even After Securing Permission''

Went to a place about a 1/4 mile from my home, It was a high school from the 1920's to the 1960's. But it was torn down in the 1980's to build a golden age home.So i new where they played sport's when it was an abandon school for all thows year's, You could see where the old playing fields and blechers stood. So i thought i would do a little detecting around there to see if a school ring or somthing of value may have been dropped at one time. Well i went and got permission from one of the people that worked in side the place, the woman said go a head i do not see any harm in it so i thought cool i will get to work.I was there for about a 45 min, when this ''A HOLE '' comes up to me and says what do you think you are doing, I said what's it look like not knowing who this guy is, being that i had already got permission to be there. So i told him i talked with some one in side and they said it was ok. He starts to rant and rave about no one gives permission but him with any thing that go's on there, and bitching about liability and so on. So i said in a nice manner that i would leave, and the guy is on my heels still ranting so i turned around and lost my temper. And i told him to back off before i was going to snap. You just cant get a breack in this sport. :rage:

Were you using your new shovel or a small digger and screwdriver?

The sight of a shovel can get them to freak out......

I feel your pain! Let's face it: we're in a hobby that has connotations (ie.: that you might make a mess). And your "permissin" situation has happened in city parks too. We've all read the stories of the person who feels they need to get "permission" from city hall to detect. Sometimes they get a "sure, go ahead" (not unlike yours). The elated md'r heads out to the city park, only to get harrassed by some gardener or bored cop. The md'r proudly whips out his "permission", only to get it just as quickly revoked as soon as that gardener or cop gets on his cell phone to call to city hall. Doh!

It's gotten to where I just hunt places at the most off-hours, JUST to avoid busy-bodies. So peaceful, so serene, etc... :)

It sure is nice to have a couple of spots you can stay for an extended time unbothered by anybody...but anywhere public like a park or sports field seems to be run and gun before the sun. I have had some great dialog with cops and park workers and whatnot without any sass, so luckily those @holes like the one you ran into are just a seldom funny story..

Wasp, i had my lesche tool and i even had it in my back pocket with my shirt tail hanging over it just to be on the safe side. some times a guy just can't win. it's got to the point that a person feel's like a law breaker. and i don't have run in's with the law and i pay my taxes. some times it make one want to give up the sport. ''Just Can't Let Them Get You Down I Guess''. :sadwalk:

Hey! Don't give up the hobby.

Go back and talk to him and explain your interest in the history of the site so close to your home......maybe sign a permission statement relieving them of any liability for anything that happens to you. Offer to split your finds 50/50 and to return any personally identifiable jewelry to the rightful owner. Explain how careful you are to leave the grounds better than you find them.

You're right when you say, "Just can't let them get you down."

Don't leave that old silver history in the ground.
