Was thinking about getting AT Pro but

going back to Keith's post about it hitting good on small nails close to the surface. Maybe a minor problem and just needs a little fine tuning? Looks like the best detector for fresh water lakes.

Any comparisons yet to the Tejon?

Thanks,
Rick

from those who have the At-Pro what their opinion is so far...
....Strange silence.........................................................

Since the AT Pro seems to be an "overpowered" unit, will it lose depth raising the coil to mitigate the high tones on shallow nails?

I'm still looking at an AT Pro for early next year, let's see if this issue can be resolved. (Just a note to manufacturers - It's things like this that would warrant a USB connector for updates, as opposed to sending the unit in. There is one detector that does that that I know of.)

Yes ... there are posts all over the place and videos too of people using the new Garrett AT PRO and what they think of it.
But only the videos make noise ... reading is silent but nothing strange about that.

Besides ... you couldn't buy a new one now if you wanted one.
The first run has been sold out.

Been using the one I have at the beach for a few days now and so far I like it very much.
Sandard mode works very much like a GTP 1350 ... the Pro Mode is all about the audio.
The Iron Audio feature is something I think all detectors should have as it will reveal those bottle caps that like to impersonate a coin.
Detection depth is both modes is about the same but there might be a slight edge in depth to the Pro Mode.
I was impressed with the buttons ... they are not the squishy rubbery ones you see on some other electronic equipment.
They are firm to the touch and operate with a nice sharp click.
The new coil seems to be the hot item and I can see ACE 250 owners adding it to their detectors.
Well made and solid ... not cheap plastic ... and I think it is the secret to the AT PRO's depth and sensitivity.
Over all construction of the detector is excellent.

SO there you go Steve ... just for you.

my beach is covered with nails big time :detecting:
the at pro walks through them with eaze
so far its a hell of a detector deep deep hot hot :hot:
its going to replace my golden umax waterproof beach otter im thinking

I think when the votes are all in the AT will probably out perform most everything out there in one way or another. Garrett got their act together on this one. I'm still waiting for mine. When I get it I'll uncover all the little beneficial quirks it may have and allnew machines have one or two.

I would suggest not over analyzing a choice of metal detectors. There are many out there that will do the job. The important thing is finding one you like and learning how to use it to the max. I think the At Pro is a good choice but then it may not be the best one for you. Only you can figure that out.

Field reports on the At Pro have been showing up on at least six metal detecting forums so there is plenty of information out there.

Good Luck

Jerry

I think the initial question of this thread.

Does the AT Pro give false high tones on shallow nails?

That is the only thing really being questioned right now. This may not be an issue for most hunters.

Here is the quote from another forum regarding the shallow nails:

Keith said:
Also one other thing is the small less than 2 inch long nails that are in within 1.5 inches of the coil high tone no matter what....this is causing concern when trying to pick in nail littered area's ( sound's like good target's everywhere)......larger iron is easier to discern it's the small iron that causes you to think it co-located target's..Small grunt= small ping worry's you....Large grunt smaller ping well you know it's larger iron falsing...

Just not right for tight hunting when most of the smaller nails are on the surface by natural occurrence ( Most site I hunt are littered with smaller surface nails!)

I own most of the garrett line,at least those still being made. The ATPro seems to be as good as most of the high end machines I have, and is a very deep seeking all terrain detector as it's name implies. Granted I haven't used it a lot yet but it certainly will be my main detector (not the backup). It goes deep and I don't have to dig junk anymore. Add to that it's light and a great coin detector. So far I have hunted a burned down 1800's house full of square nails both big and small and have had no problem identifying them. Hope that helps.

If you run the iron audio there will be no question that it is a nail. Only one detector I know of that has a USB and no updates can be done through the USB. Just for downloading and sharing programs for different types of hunting. No detector made you can update at home yet. That would be a cool function though.

You can do it with the Deus, but it's only in Europe right now and it's $$$. Though a guy in San Fran has started testing it.

I'm not sure, Keith Southern says he was getting high tones on shallow nails and he uses pro mode. Maybe the iron audio needs to be on though. Good point.

I HAVE ONLY HAD MINE AT THE PARK 2 TIME 28 COINS ON BOTH DAYS. I WILL CALL IT CHERRY PICK IN.

STD COIN MODE/ IRON DISC UP TO 40. HITS ARE GOOD. I AM NOT DIGGING DEEP TARGETS. MY DIGGER IS TO SHORT. LOL I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE WATER.
