I think I want something I can take into the water or at least into the surf without worry. So for you excal people.... Tell me about it. Is it as heavy as everyone says it is. And what do you do to make it swingable for a day. Also, what coil would you suggest 8 or 10 inch. I have a troy x5 and a whites mxt. So I mainly relic hunt and do a little beach hunting but I want something to be a beach "killer". I have some decent beach areas where civil war battles happened. Anyway thanks in advance for any help you can give a "wannabe" excal owner.

God Bless......

for my water hunting, mostly fresh water beach's so I don't really need to worry about big waves, I'm just careful not to stumble when using my SOV in shallow water. I use the Excalibur in shallow & deep, chin deep and find that yes the Excalibur can be heavy in shallow but a good straight rod like Babbs balances the Excalibur out a little better, but once you're in deeper water it's easier to move around with, lighter. I also use a Troy X5 on the beach and I chest mount the X5 sometimes as well. The Sov with a WOT coil is awesome on the beach and in shallow water, I pinpoint in disc. mode on the toe of the coil, works for me & the scoop. H.H.:)

Pappy, where are you located? I'm in the Charleston area. We used to dig lots of CW relics on Folly Beach before the first beach renoursishment about ten years ago and now they've recently completed another one. Still able to find the occasional but few and far between. So many other areas around here that used to be accessible are now developed or prohibited. I am waiting on an Excalibur too, should be here in a couple of days or so. Been using a Explorer II and a CZ-20. Can't dive anymore but still love the beach and getting into the water a little. Best of luck.

Hey waterman: Thanks for the info. Yeah I wish troy would come out with a water detector. SO.... I guess I'll try and save my pennies for the excal. ;)

Hey Jerry: I'm in Florence... But a lot of my family were born and raised in Charleston. My grandfather was born in Charleston and grew up on the wando and in fact you can see the old homestead still, off of the 41 bridge.

Now my daughter, soninlaw, and grandaughter live in mt pleasant. So I get down there from time to time.

I know what you mean about development and such. When I lived in Charleston in the early 80's you could metal detect just about anywhere. oh well.....

let me know how it goes with the excal....

Hi,Pappy. Talk about coincidence. I was born and grew up in Florence. Been on James Island since '74, when I came back into the Navy. Got out in '68 and then decided to come back in. Yep, I can remember when Charleston had lots of good places to hunt besides the beaches but now the City of Charleston is off limits to metal detecting. I had relatives in Mt Pleasant and Sullivans Island but I think they are gone now, up the coast a little ways. Hope Florence hasn't gotten like Charleston. I still have a newspaper clipping of me detecting in Timrod Park back in the early 80's. Don't remember finding much but I grew up in that park. Years ago we had a municipal swimming pool there and it was a great place to go in summer. I still have family up there so I'll give you a pm if I start to come home. Maybe we can get together. Florence has really changed over the years but hasn't everywhere. Take care and have a great weekend.
