Was searching in the woods Sunday. Found a tick

on me Wednesday. Tried tweezers but was afraid to crush it. Tied a piece of string around it and was able to maintain a steady pull for 4-5 minutes till it came out intact and alive. Saved it in a small plastic bag, put it in the freezer in case I get any symptoms.

Watch for those things (ticks) out there guys & gals.-----My wife & I were detecting up in the hills about this same time last year (there was even still a lot of snow on the ground in that area).----We both got them on us.---She got one "buried" in her skin & I had a terrible time getting it out (useing all the tried & true methods).---Finally got the thing off without pulling its head off.----Be sure & check yourselves over after hunting--those things can be dangerous.---------Del

Shucks-I found 2 last year, and 1 snake, didn'get bit by none of em, so I left em in Tennessee, don't neither one of them impress me a bit, so far I been able to get the tics dug out and didn' even get no infection, lordy=I hate them things=Another hazard detectorists gotta look out for:detecting:

hey bugar!
do ya "burn" 'em out?..just wonderin' as i hear ya can back 'em out with a cigar,or a cigarette!

Just got home...removed 4...Tuesday 3 and wife 4..guess gonna be bountiful year for these creatures.Decided just gonna hunt in open, unless got good tick spray on...Curt

Hi Curt; My friend contracted Lymes disease from a tick.It made him extremely sick and he will have effects that will last him for the rest of his life literally. So please be carefull. Those littkle suckers are no joke for sure. ok. Anyway I'm glad you got them off you.Until later; PEACE:RONB :starwars:

Yes in my area deer ticks do carry the lyme disease..but most ticks i find are what we call "wood" or "dog" ticks...they are much larger, and though they do carry the disease, its not positive they pass along to humans..regardless the population seems to have exploded in recent years making it hard to enjoy going out into the woods...and definitly no fun finding them when you get home...Curt

hey curt!
do you find that "burnin" 'em off works?
can you get them to back out using this method?
some have proclaimed that a cigar or cigarette
will do the job, then just drop them in gasoline, and touch 'em off!
they touch the cig to the blood sack, and the heat transfer forces them out!

Hey jmaryt-------My father-in-law did the following for years & it was "plumb effective".-----He would light a match & blow it out---then get the match just close enough to the ticks butt end to make it uncomfortable & it would back out.---Just do it immediately after blowing the match out so it doesn't have time to cool off.----I guess a cigarrette would do the same thing---but I don't smoke!------Del

yeah!..years ago i watched someone with a lighted cigar take some big "fat" ones
off some squirrels that was loaded with them!..he touched the business end of the stogie, and the heat
transfer did the rest!..took a few minutes for the tick to let go but they always did!...they was full of blood when they backed out!
he would then grab 'em with a pair of tweezers, drop 'em in some gas in a can, have a dozen or so in there, then touch 'em off
"cookin' 'em to a cinder!

ticks are bad in my area also, and mushroom season is just about here and i will be spending some time in the woods. check out this product for treating your hunting clothes to prevent ticks. it is called permethrin and is used by the military. you treat your clothing and let it dry and it will supposedly kill a tick that gets on the treated clothing after moving only 10 inches. a big spray bottle will cost about 15.00 or so but will treat 4 sets of hunting clothing and supposedly not lose its effectiveness for up to 6 washings or six weeks. the website i found this on is www.rei.com. google permethrin and do some reading about it, it looks to be very effective in preventing ticks................roger

That sounds like the same stuff I use. I do most of my mding in the woods of cape cod and the ticks are plentiful.

Try heating a pair of tweezers as usually does the job...best advice get a good repellent as they carry various diseases that can cause sickness...

Hi everyone! It is probably a bad idea to ever burn off a tick, not only will you be susceptable diesese associated with burns but who knows it may hasten the spread of lyme and other dieseses that ticks carry. I was taught at mountaineering school that we had eight hours before the transmission of rocky mountain fever and of course lyme diesese you may have up to 36 hours before transmission. Ticks are moving north, I saw one or two in thirty years now I see them all the time. Good luck detecting, Darryl.

Hey Jmaryt..we usually grab with tweezers..might take a bit but then these arent the "deer ticks" that transmit lyme and are much larger than deer ticks..been lucky and have only found maybe one or two possible deer ticks and those were not on long enough to latch on..Curt

good thing about they don't carry lyme!..nasty!..nasty!
