Warranty question

Okay, so there's a long story behind this, but the basic question is this: Does Minelab warranty different parts of their detectors for different periods of time if the parts are main components of the detector? I know, as outlined on their site, that the CTX is covered for 3 years, but other things like the coils and batteries are less than that.

The long story:
I got my detector used a couple of years ago and when I checked, the warranty was up in December 2016. Since I got it I've had them replace a defective stock coil and WM10 module, both under warranty. Yesterday, I turned the detector on and got a relatively thick black streak down the screen around the CO13 area as well as two smaller streaks elsewhere. It goes away when I turn the backlight off, and even when it's there I can still see stuff through the streak so it appears to be a problem with the backlight, not the screen itself. At the recommendation of some people on a 3030 group on Facebook, I called Minelab this morning to see about getting it replaced. I played dumb a bit and asked if it was still under warranty. The lady told me it was under warranty until March of next year, which was a total surprise to me. I got my RMA number and am going to send it in this week.

An additional thought:
I like to water hunt when it's warm enough, but I have never submerged my detector past the screen because I'm afraid of frying it....I got new gaskets awhile ago and replaced it so it SHOULD be fine, but considering I have been under the impression that it was out of warranty I was always too chicken to submerge it. So when I hunt rivers, I only hunt waist-deep water which limits me, and when I find a target I mark it with my pinpointer, count off my steps as I walk my detector back to the shore, go back to find the target, and then go back to retrieve my detector. It's a pain in the butt. So now, if the WHOLE detector is still under warranty, I kind of want to go submerge my detector before I send it in (with the module off, obviously) just in case it does fry I can still get it replaced. The other half of my brain says "it'd be a shame to have it fry only to find out that only the screen was still under warranty and then I still had to pay to replace the rest of it for some reason."

Taking all that into consideration, what do you think?

I think you'd be best served getting the facts from the only place that can say what the facts really are regarding your specific machine...that lady at Minelab. If you are worried about wearing out your welcome and the screen fix really shouldn't be covered and they might catch on to that, better now than after you owe them a couple/few whundred dollars to find out. Just ask her ...if you drown it,is it covered? Just my thought as a non water hunter.

The lady you spoke with at Minelab is likely the same lady from Minelab who reads this forum on a regular basis. So now that she knows that you thought the warranty expired in December 2016, I suppose she will also realize you were the one who she told to send it in, told you it was under warranty until March of 2018, and sent you the RMA. My guess is that they will fix it under warranty, since that is what she told you. But you might want to have them confirm the March 2018 date in writing, just so you have a record for the future. Email sent! Thanks!

For reference, I wanted to share what came out of the email conversation I had with Jamie because in the years I've been using minelabs, I've never heard this before and I'd bet other people are in the same boat thinking that their warranty is up when it's not. (Passed along with her permission)

She said that the warranty date displayed in their system is the date from when the initial dealer received the detector (in my case, December 2016), but there is a second warranty date generated when the first customer bought it from the dealer. She said that the second (actual) warranty date isn't readily visible, which is why I was getting conflicting dates.

So, to me, I'd say if you bought a used minelab detector you may want to double check your warranty date!

Thanks, Jamie!

Correct me if im wrong......... but ML has a 6 mos warranty on work as well. The machine is designed to be an all around machine........ to include waterproof. Most of the time WE are the issue. I do nothing but water hunt here in Fl....... mine gets wet.

"Most of the time WE are the issue"...no arguing with that,it's simply true. There are some failures but very few compared to user error. It wouldn't take much to accidentally drown a machine, but that would be an "accident", implying user error, not product failure.

Minelab honors warranty from the original purchase date so that could have been what the rep saw instead of a default date in their system. I know coils have a 3 year warranty too. Batteries only carry a 6 month warranty.

Your correct Dew, there is 6 month warranty on work their repair centers do.

I just purchased a new CTX July 1, & battery has already quit charging, I called the dealer & he said I should call Kellyco, so called there and was told to send in charging cradle and battery which I did, but was also told the cradle is on back order until end of September  Hopefully its the battery.

Just would like to say, I have never had a problem with my CTX, and I have owned it 38 months now and drown it nearly every week. Chest deep water where the screen is no where visible and only hunt by tones. I can not imagine counting the paces back and forth from target to shore. You bought a machine that is rated for ten feet deep so go for it. You will be fine. Just make sure all gaskets are installed properly. Enjoy your machine. I treat it no different than my other water machines.

Stevey,
It's probably the battery....Li-on batteries can be tricky things.
I've had a couple go bad...one was weak from the first day...but never had a problem with any charge cradle.
(Of course, that's no guarantee.)

If you have to use the AA pack for a while, I recommend eneloop rechargeable batteries.
Good luck,
mike
