Warranty Question?

I bought a new Tesoro Golden Umax off of Ebay. I received the detector today. The detector is brand new. All packing materials, checklist, bumper sticker, owners ,manual, etc is in the box, except for the warranty card. I called the dealer that sold me the detector, he is located in Canada. I told him there was not a warranty card in the box. He tells me that the detector is brand new, however he is not selling it with a mfg warranty. He told me I can return the detector today for a full refund. I called Tesoro and they said the dealer would have to help with the card? Should I go through the trouble of sending this back to Canada? Has anyone ever had a warranty problem with Tesoro? Thanks.

I am surprized that Tesoro did not tell you not to worry about the Warrantee card when you called them.. I have been buying new and used Tesoros for at least 25 years and have on more than a few occasions had no warrantee card to fill out or send in. The few times I have had a Tesoro that needed a fix, or just a tuneup, I would send it in and no mention of a card was ever mentioned and they fixed or tuned, or whatever, (free of charge most all times) and even replaced Batt doors and holders etc.(free of charge also) and sent the detector back to me freight paid. If it has Tesoro on it they will take care of it, and take care of it good! That is, and has been their way of doing things for a long time and I doubt seriously that there will be any change in that policy. HH Charlie

That's an "iffy" deal. They might be generous with everyone in the world, but turn they're on you with no warranty card. I've heard they are really great with these things, but maybe the company gets a new CEO tomorrow and all bets will be off. So you have a gamble here. You might ask here on the forum how many folks have had problems with that model of detector and base a decision on that. Personally with Tesoro's warranty being so good, I think I'd "cover my back" and get my money back, pay a little more some where else to get that warranty. Good luck, Ron.

Dale unless Tesoro sells them that way(you should know after speaking with them) I would guess this detector isnt actually new but "like new" I just got a cibola off a fellow here on findsmalls classifieds and its got all that stuff also and its in like new condition but I new it didnt have a warranty card as he is the one who bought it new. the price reflects that.
did you get a better than new price? you can roll the dice and hope it doesnt break or that tesoro will fix it for free or send it back and buy from a dealer specifying a warranty card for your peace of mind. to count on tesoro always repairing for free is a roll of the dice also, depends on how comfortable you are with that. mine was just repaired for free but I certainly didnt count on it and was prepared to pay whatever they would charge.

Seems I heard somewhere that on a warranty issue Tesoro will search their database (warranty card registration), if they don't find anything, they might then ask you for a copy of your receipt to show proof of purchase.

Why if your seller is a dealer is he selling without a warranty card? Did he say, or did you ask him? Is he a legitimate Tesoro dealer?

If were me, I would make a copy of the original ebay posting, as possible proof of purchase. Did he state in the add it was "Brand New"? I would then write a letter to Tesoro and include that copy of the posting as proof of purchase and explain there was no warranty card and I wanted to register my new machine. I suspect Tesoro would then put you in their data base as having registered a new machine, and you are good to go. Be sure to include the machine ID number.

Now, if this guy is selling new stolen machines or something else underhanded, Tesoro might balk at all this, but I seriously doubt it.

First I would like to say up front that I am a Tesoro man. I prefer using my Tesoro Golden detector over all the other brands and detectors that I have owned. I was buying this second Golden because it was a "great" deal. The fine people at Tesoro did call me back. They were going to cover me with any warranty issues. This is what I have heard and thought all along. However, when I gave them the serial number off of the detector, a little box must have popped up. They told me that I had in fact bought a stolen detector. I asked them to have the right full owner contact me. There was a dealer in Canada that made a sale to someone of this Golden. After the dealer shipped the detector, the buyer canceled the credit card purchase. The ship to box was fictitious address. It may have been a PO box, I'm not sure. Anyway, the right full dealer called me about their detector. They asked me to contact Pay Pal and get my money back. Then ship them the detector. I instead contacted the company I purchased the Golden from. I gave them the other companies contact information. Within minutes they issued me a complete refund and asked that I ship the detector back to the right full company. They did not tell me how they came in possession of the Golden. I shipped the detector back to Canada this afternoon. All of my shipping charges were credited back to me.
I just want everyone to know that Tesoro was willing to do the right thing. They are a great company and they make great detectors. I guess I will be looking for another Golden.

On another note...Tesoro doesn't want "new" machines being sold too cheap(below a standard mark-up). Some dealers may sell a new(or demo) machine as a used one on e-bay, just to get their money back out of it. So, there are often good deals out there. I'm glad you got your issue worked-out.
