Don't get overly rambunctious jabbing your pinpointer into the ground.I only found 3 coins yesterday and I did a dermabrasion on the best one.Others were 1912 S wheat and 1892 V nickel.
 
.... going to your nearest independent hardware dealer and purchasing a rubber chair tip to place over the stabbing end of your pin pointer. Before you leave the house, either measure the diameter of the tip or take your pin pointer with you for sizing. Plan "B" might be to coat the tip with some silicone caulk or dip it in plastic dip like you use on tool handles.

That's a free tip from your friendly hardware / detector dealer.
 
I used to have some kind of rubber thing that would fit over my pinpointer, but I don't remember what it was for.
