Wanted:Infinium with Gain, volume, overload protection

Zadok2

New member
The Infinium PI could use an update. 1. It lacks a Gain control. You must increase the DISC instead! 2. Like other PI's, it has problems with EMI. Whit'e TDI PRO is supposed to be exceptionally stable and immune to EMI.
Jim Straight uses the Infinium to gold nugget hunt, but many serious prospectors use White's TDI or Minelab PI's.
3.There is no volume control for waterproof headphones. 4. A signall overload circuit would save eardrums from blasts by loud targets.
With the advent of White's TDI PRO, an Infinium PRO would be more competitive.

Unfortunately, some users never learn to set up the Infinium, or other detectors for that matter, and have trouble with EMI. I have learned the Infinium well, and amazed at how well it performs. I have no problems with EMI. I like the price, I like the fact that it works on land as good as it does in water. It has a variety of coils available, and is manufactured in USA, repaired in USA by a company which has been in business for a long time.

And for a matter of interest, you do not turn up the gain by increasing the disc. Try turning up the threshold, which will give you more gain and sensitivity. As far as volume control....the standard land headphones DO have volume controls. The water ones don't, to compensate for volume loss under water. Overload system? turn down the volume or add a piece of foam into the water headset if you are using them on land. The audio output and its duration is a form of discrimination for judging a size on a target. With PI's having a very narrow means of any discrimination, I don't understand your reasoning behind the request for a "signal overload circuit "?

I agree with John's post...so read it carefully it explained alot!

No need for overload circuit...have you heard those Minlab PI's screem at some nuggets?... holy smokes. I use my Infinium to prospect also and I know Jim Straight. He has done well with his as I have. He has also been using the Whites TDI as of late.

However the New Whites TDI does have more sensitivity to small gold < .6 gram. Above that they are about the same. Newer tech I guess...

Good news though, I have heard rumors of an Infinium update/improvements in the near future!...your right..... IT IS ABOUT TIME! Mostly for prospectors though, to keep up with the Minelabs and new Whites. Infinium has definatly lost ground in the electronic prospecting world to the TDI.

I think Garrett is on track to catch up. Don't think the AT will be the last new unit coming out the door.

How do you turn down the volume without a volume control on the waterproof headphones? Good idea about adjusting the threshold! The Infinium hit a dime at 18" in hot ground near Lake Tahoe, while the TDI hit one at 20" in the same ground! An Infinium Pro at a lower price should be competitive. After all, it's waterproof!

I was refering to the land headset that comes with the Infinium. If you use the water headset, which has no volume control, that's the one I was refering to insert a piece of foam into each earmuff.

A signal overload circuit could be added to the waterproof headphones. This eliminates the need for a volume control on the detector itself and is superior to stuffing foam in the earpieces, which could result in not hearing lesser target responses!

Foam is cheaper. Wouldnt be cost effective for Garrett to add a circuit. Around loud rivers and ocean waves sometimes the full volume is needed.

RE:Increasing DISC on Infinium instead of reducing nonexistent Gain control. www.AKMINING.COM, select 1.mining & prospecting 2.Steve's Mining Journal 3.Infinium in Hawaii Feb 18, 2003.
Kauai. Hot volcanic beach. Steve compares DISC control on Infinium to SENS control on VLF. With DISC off, Infinium was noisy & unstable in salt water and made salt noise at the end of each swing on the beach, in salty sand. He put it aside for a Minelab Excalibur, which had no trouble with the salt!
The next day, he discovered that by TURNING UP THE DISC, SINCE THERE IS NO GAIN ON THE INFINIUM, he was able to reduce the noise! Underwater, he set DISC at 5-6. Steve feels that with the Infinium the "DISC CONTROL CAN MORE PROPERLY BE THOUGHT OF AS A SENSITIVITY CONTROL...."
His finds included several 14k & 18k gold and/or platinum bands ( one with sapphire) and a 14k class ring with sapphire.

AT MOORE CREEK IN ALASKA, in mixed hot rocks, the Infinium found 7 nuggets=4.11 ounces of gold!

The disc control is a pulse delay. (not a standard type) The lower it is the more sensitive it is to small items or nuggets. Higher setting reduces ground noise and less sensitive to small low conductors. The threshold controls the sensitivity of the recieve circuit. Send GAIN is always full on.

Disc set on 0 = 10 uS, disc set on 3 = 25 uS. (approximate) Garrett says not to set it beyond 3. Same range as the Whites TDI but theirs is full turn pulse delay knob. Max 24.

The Infinium is a good machine...EXCEPT for needing some more depth/sensitivity compared to the Minelabs. The TDI is more sensitive to small gold < .6 gram. Above that they are about the same.

I hear an Infinium update is underway also....its about time, its needed to keep up with the current prospecting pulse induction machines. Their getting a bit behind compared to them.

I thought that signal overload only took effect for extremely loud noises and did not obscure weak targets. The Infinium LS could also use a BOOST for very faint signals!

The booster would be the submersable headphones as they are very loud! Did I mention how loud they are? I built an external speaker system for my Infinium and it is quite loud also like the submersable headphones which are VERY LOUD.....Did I say how loud they are?

What else ya got....?

Alan

Bearkat:
If waterproof headphones are that LOUD, they could be worn under the chin on dry land, saving the cost of land headphones or an external speaker.

Yes very true Zadok as I have done just that...however my external speaker is lighter and more comfortable as I can clip it whereever I want,...belt loop, pocket, shirt or the detector itself and it is loud also as it has a built in amp with volume control.

Here is some pictures of it as well as some nugget pics: http://gallery.me.com/bearkat4160#100092

Go away

Just kidding! Nice nuggets with Infinium. I'll await the release of the update. Until then , I'm gone!
