This is what I like to tell all the newbies wanting to get into the hobby.
I find being I sell new and used detectors want the one that just finds the gold and silver and don't want the trash as they seen these detectors on TV. These are the people that are new to the hobby or those into the hobby less than 2 years. I tell them if they find such a detector I can sell 1000 of them with no problem, but those of us that have been detecting for a while knows there is no such detector and cant see it ever happening either.
I try to sell a newbie to the hobby a Ace 250, a Tesoro Compadre, or a Fisher F-2 as these are easy detectors and all around $200 to start with and if they don't like the hobby and want to sell it again they will lose very little. If they want to try something a little better then the X-Terra 30 or 50 while the 70 to those that are more experienced in detecting. Now those that have been detecting for a while and like the hobby then we talk the Sovereign GT,Explorers and the Fishers F-75.
This hobby is not for everyone as we have seen, it take patience and time to know the detector you are using, very few and I mean very few get rich in this hobby, but it can be done with less than 1% do. Many will pay for some of the gas to drive to sites, some just get enough to buy a soda or 2 and have seen where a few even will find a great find and pay for their detector first time out. In most case what you will find is the exercises, fresh air and the excitement of finding something that may not have seen day light for many years with some over 1000s of years. Most items will be trash and the more you learn of the detector the less you will see, but there is also the time you think it is trash it is a gold ring as they will read like trash too.
This is a great hobby and meet some really great people out detecting and our Internet friends are some of the best there is even if we have never meet them in person we feel we have known them for years. Been doing it since 1973 and still get excited with every find I dig up wondering if this will be a pull tab or that $10,000 diamond and gold ring I keep dreaming of finding. It is a fun and rewarding hobby that don't cost as much as many other hobbies and can be done anytime and you don't have to drive long ways to do and spend as much time as you like. If you are the person that feels you will get rich every time out and don't want to dig the trash and dispose of it this may not be the hobby for you, but if it is start with something easy to use and not a lot of controls to adjust, or should I say miss adjust as chance are you will enjoy it better and learn your detector much faster and enjoy the hobby more.
Thanks Art for saying it like it is.
