WANT TO BUY EQUIPMENT

Hello!
My husband and I hike the Blue Ridge in Virginia and would like to visit some battlefields. We have never had a metal detector and don't want to spend a lot to find out if we like it. Do you recommend a starter model? Does anyone out there have something for sale?
Thanks for the help!
We look forward to this new hobby!

I will let more knowledgeable people recommend their favorite detector.
I will suggest that you get the best you can afford. If you do not like it you can sell it on eBay and you can figure whatever difference between buying and selling price will be worth the experience and the gain of whatever you do dig out of the ground.
If you do like it I can almost guarantee that within a year at least one of you will be upgrading to a better detector or adding accessories like pinpointing probes, extra coils or digging tools.
One word of caution. You say you are after civil war relics. Be very careful about where you hunt. There are stiff penalties for hunting in a protected area including confiscation of all you gear and vehicle and possible jail time and/or fines.
Go to any of the detector forums for more information. This forum is really not the right one for that kind of information.
