Want to buy a Sovereign GT and have Questions....

EasySwing

New member
I want to buy the GT, but I do not know where to buy and have a few questions.

1.) Does the GT come with a straight shaft. The minelab catalog shows a s shaped shaft. New England detectors shows a straight.
2.) Does the Gt come with a pair of head phones? Are they waterproof or not.
3.) What is the deal with the 180 meter? This is optional I think from the pictures. How much more does it cost to have it fitted in at time of purchase. Worth it?
4.) Where is the best price in your opinion?

I would like to purchase the Excal, but all the problems I have read about ( 2 out of 10 have manufacture related breakdowns, ie. knobs wiring) What say you guys???
Thanks, Marty

where did you read that 2 out of 10 excals breakdown?

I did a search on Excal's Reviews and read 56 reviews. Here is the review that I pulled the stat...

Excalibur user for 4 years now
Joe/Oldebeechnut in Baltimore Maryland -
I own both the 800 & 1000 excaliburs, older models. Both have servered me well during this time, no problems. They do have there weird tones but in time you will learn and master them, if the treasure is there, the excal will give you the best chance to find it....The new excal II's seem to have issues at about 2 bads per 10 sold, mostly coil problems. I am going to buy excal II but I'm waiting for them to clear up there Quality control problems...I'm guessing 1 year plus. Here is the excal in action, few of my vid's on the excal

these will give ideas of what to expect using the excals, and the new excal II
Good Luck.....................Joe/Obn

The Gt comes with a straight shaft.
The 180 was discontinued by Minelab. You will have to buy one second hand.
No headphones included. Why waterproof? The Sovereign is not waterproof!
Check with the Minelab sponsors here for a deal. Get something you need thrown in on the deal. Headphones? Pinpointer? Scoop?

Thank you Goodmore for your response. Are you the man that makes the pro stock scoops? It is a great scoop for the beach and surf. Anyway... If the Excal II for the most part does not break down I would love to add one to my arsenal in the near future. I just am really cautious and like to do as much research as possible in order to make the best decision, like all of us. Either machine sounds like the top of breed for beach use. I do love to hunt in the surf!

The Sovereign GT is not water proof so if you are wanting to hunt in the surf, go with the EXCAL to start with.

There's a lot of EXCAL.'s out there that have never given there owner's any trouble. Yes some have had trouble
but thats true with any thing. If you have a problem with it send it and have it fixed and get on with your life.

The EXCAL is a top of the line detector that can , will , and has proven its self for years and will do so for years to come.

A 180 meter just went for $320 on Ebay ??? wow ..... I tried selling a 180 meter last year and had a hard time getting $80 bucks for it....... The GT is a hall of fame Beach comber......... Good luck

A large portion of breakdowns are caused by pilot error:rofl:

Wow 320.00? I should have stocked up. I have Joe Patrick meter mods on my Sovereigns. I have been using the sovereign for a couple years now. I still like having a meter.

It had been at $76 for the last week, then over night it goes to over $200 and ended up over $300, I thought someone made a mistake on the bid when it hit $200 and when it went over $300 I knew it wasnt a mistake on the bid.
I was thinking on bidding when it was a $76 to use myself.

they must be getting ready for a new soverigneGT I hope the new one is better than this one if they could put the GT in an F-75 that would really be nice

I would really be tempted to plunge the $$ should minelab go that route with a new SovGT. Think of it....nice and light with no hanging cords & no need to hip mount. Nice to dream. Yes, I saw that Digimeter climbing on ebay lol man they must of wanted it extremely bad. I just about choked when I saw the $310.99.

The sovereign GT. is a great detector. i think some my not like the sound of it, its fixed in pitch- hold. but you will get use to it. it is the deepest minlab detector. i have the explorer witch i love. but the sovereign is deeper. and yes straignt shaft. and meter is a good purchese.

I saw that too! I sold my meter this past summer for $100. I guess I should have waited 5 months..... That's a CRAZY price. Is it because they are rare? I didn't think they would become that rare in a few months...

A meter is on eBay right now. It's a DTI 2 made by Sunray. Just a heads-up

Is that yours? I saw that same setup bought on another forum by a person named silverman from Ray in CA.
