Want...Compadre info.

Hi. I've never read anything bad about a Compadre. I'm considering getting one and modding it a bit. Many times I drive by some Tot-lot or some other good looking site, and wish I had my detector with me, but don't. This detector would be a great candidate for modding to fit in a "Matchbox!" A few questions please; what do you guys REALLY think of this little detector. Do you ever wish you'd brought your "big" detector along instead? Is the coil wire "wired in" or does it have a plug where it goes into the housing? If it has anything about it you don't like please tell me. Any comments invited and welcomed. :please:

The Compadre has excellent SENS and a true 180 DISC. The DISC is awesome on iron. The DISC is awesome on iron. The DISC is awesome on iron. I know of a guy who finds more gold with that thing than a nugget detector. Perfect to keep in car. Only $150 and if it vibrates to pieces it has the lifetime warranty. Thing is I can't seem to tear up any of my Tesoro's. It pretty much already is a matchbox detector. About 2 lbs. if I remember. If I could only have one detector I would rather it be a Compadre than a whole lot of other machines!

Is a great coin hunter and it is very light but it only detects coins close to 6 inches. I you do the mode of interchangeable coils you will lose warranty but it goes for coins up to 9 inches on the smallest ones. I did the mode on mine and I am 100 % satisfied. Anyways I spent 40 dlls on the connectors plus the 160 dlls from the machine new is 200 dlls. Plus I forgat the coil 50 dlls. My brother in-law did the mode for me so I saved so money here. I bet you can get a good deal with another tesoro that has already interchangeable coils. The compadre is excellent at detecting small metal things like earings and 22 bullets. I am using the 8 inch brown coil but I want to try the 9 x 8 just to see if it is compatible. I hope this helps a bit.

Coil is wired in.

I have one with the standard coil swapped out for a 9x8 coil. It is not a depth maniac, but it surprises me. I've dug 7 to 8 inch deep quarters in the wood chips with this set up and some dimes to about 6 inches. I may eventually put connectors on it. There are times I want the smaller coil. Where the chips are not that deep and there is a weed block fabric layer, I prefer the Cibola with the sensitivity turned down so I'm not chasing everything that is right under the fabric (I don't cut the weed block fabric).

Discrimination is very good, and repeatable so you can thumb the discriminator to see where targets go away and get a good idea of what you are looking at. To get more accurate pinpointing with the bigger coil, I raise it up until the target is barely repeatable and then center that small beep on the coil. If things are trashy, you want the standard coil, either the 7 inch or 5.75 inch. Some older ones came with the 7 inch as standard.

It is a fun detector.

Mine has a wired 8" coil.

Bought it on may 28

Searched 145 hours since then (not my main detector).

Yesterday found my 3.000 th coin on the beach.

Nice detector, just perfect like it is, no needs for mods unless you can get a 2nd hand unit (warranty voided).

I find the Compadre one of my favorites when it comes to tot lots. If I felt if mine needed mods, well I have other machines, but the Compadre for what it is and what it does, does just swell for tot lots. It breaks down about right for me. I even threw it in a sissy bar luggage bag on my motorcycle a few times.
For the cost, I don't have any negatives, but would like the coil change feature. Although I would probably use the 5.75 coil on it 95% of the time, so no big deal to me.
I always haul 2 or more detectors except when on the motorcycle a couple times. I could always walk back to the vehicle to get a big dog machine, but I don't find myself doing that. I just have to much fun with the Compadre. Most areas I hunt, I don't find too many coins beyond 6 inches anyway.
