Want a new detector

I would like to upgrade my detector. I have a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV . I have approx $500 to spend and have been looking at an X-Terra 505 or Fisher f5. Hunt for coins and some relics. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The 505 would be a good choice and be on the lookout for a good used Xterra 70, they can be found within your price range. With the luck I've had, I would stay away from the other brand................MO

My son has an F2 and lets just say it never sees the light of day since I started letting him use my X-terra 70. Realistically, it has only about half the depth of the 70.

You can not go wrong with the 505 I got a used 70 non the classifieds for 375 shipped. And I really like it.

I have a 50XT and a 70XT, had the 50 first and keep as a back up while I hunt with the 70. My son has a Fisher F4, but borrows my 50XT every time he goes out. He likes the 50 over his F4. There is a nice 70XT on eBay right now, you might want to look. Keep in mind the 3kHz coil can't be used with a 50XT but can with new 505 and 70XT. You are probably going to want one of those coils. Good Luck - Bill

Welcome to the site! Very glad to have you here.

I agree the 505 is hard to beat in its price range. Good luck to you, Beale.

I have a X70 and the F5. On this forum, it would be obvious the Xterra will be a better choice over the F5. The Fisher forum may bring different results. People are partial to their brands.

I use my F5 for most hunting due to the fact it is easier to decipher what it tells me is in the ground with it's ID information and it is easier at notching out unwanted signals. It also is faster at retuning than the Xterra.

If I want more (2" to 4") depth or the option of changing my coil frequency to aid in detection of small gold nuggets, the Xterra shines in that part of my detecting preference.

I use my F5 75% of the time.
