Wall charger gone bonkers?

Well, been messing aroung with the new GT around the yard. So...The other day I forgot and left it on for almost 2 days. Last night I go to mess around with it and of course the battery was dead. Hooked up the wall charger and the red light came on and the green light on the battery pack. About 1.5 hours later both lights were OUT. Is this normal or has the charger had it after 2 uses.

If both lights were out then either you've got no power at the wall outlet or the wall transformer is bad I think. Or, it could be that the wall transformer and the charging circuit in the battery pack are not recognizing the pack. Many cheap chargers will not recognize a completely dead pack. I've had friends bring over dead drill packs for me to try to recover. I was able to charge them fine on my Accucel 6, where as on their stock drill chargers the light wouldn't even come on to recognize them.

There's a red light on the wall transformer? I don't think mine has that. Might be an update to them to show they have power. If so, does anybody know if that red light will come on if the pack isn't plugged in? If it will, then unplug the transformer from the pack and see if the red light on the transformer comes on. If it doesn't then either you have no power at the wall outlet or the transformer is bad.

Tried it on 5 diffrerent outlets. NO red light.

Did the light come on before even if the battery wasn't plugged in? If so then the transformer is bad. If not, then your pack might not be being recognized by the thing. I would think that light on the transformer would come on when plugged into the wall even if the battery wasn't plugged in, as the light on the GT's pack comes on to indicate it's charging, so why the need for a second light doing the same thing on the transformer. If you have a volt meter check the plug on the transformer and see if there is any voltage. if there is, does it match the output listed on it?

Then it's a bad transformer. Not uncommon. I was just reading about one guy who went through like 3 of them already. Buy a good aftermarket charger like the one I talk about in the battery sticky for $20.

They go bad. No red light shows it is not working. If it were then it would be warm. I had one go bad and it got really hot first. I do not charge batteries unless I am home. Don't need a fire or melted plastic smelling up the house.

That's what I'd say. If the red light is supposed to come on even if the pack isn't plugged in then that eliminates a bad pack and instead means the transformer is bad. Yes, always be around to keep an eye on things when charging any batteries, no matter what the type they are. I like to put mine in the middle of the cement floor in my basement or garage when charging. Nimhs, nicads, or lipos...Makes no difference. All pose a fire hazard if things go wrong while charging.

I think that wall transformer is rather pricey from Minelab ain't it? I know the rechargeable packs are for sure compared to what you can buy nimhs with about 2 to 3 times the capacity these days. If it is then I'd for sure get some good aftermarket charger. If you surf around you can find some good ones around $20 to $30, from simple plug and play ones to ones with many settings and the ability to do many battery chemistry types such as the Accucel 6. Whatever you buy, just make sure it's not charging faster than 1C (1 hour, or the amp rate of the capacity of the pack). In fact, I prefer something less than that like 1/2C for my "fast" charging and a bit slower when not in a rush. Just charge through the two main battery leads as there is a charging circuit in the GT's pack behind the plug. Actually, I think that "charging" circuit is really just a thermister and a diode and doesn't really do much else, at least if it's like the old Excal or older Sovereign packs. Reading some of Kered's posts on charging his XS and Excal packs refreshed my memory. He said they had a thermister to break the circuit if the pack got too hot. A cheap way to "terminate" the charge. The pack gets full, starts to get hot, and the thermister opens. Only problem is it will cool down and complete the circuit again and that on/off tripping will keep happening over and over again if the pack keeps getting hot. I suspect the Elite and GT's might be something similar but don't quote me on that.
