WALCO Picks shoves it up Doc's arse

Note 4/21/13 - this is a very old thread from 2007 that new post has bumped to top. - Steve H.

After some 7 years of promoting and advertising WALCO picks from Australia, and single handedly making them a household world here among the United States Prospecting community, I got the following email last night. (By the way I currently have 400 picks on order from them, that I obviously will not be receiving.) I have marketed these picks through my dealers nationally I have always tried to keep the prices reasonable. The W3 pick, the most popular, has always been sold for $49.95. Despite the devaluation of the dollar over the years and increased shipping costs, I have never raised the price. My goal has always been to supply the best products to America's prospectors, at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, as you can see, I will no longer be able to supply you with WALCO picks. I had repeatedly asked what the hold up was on my order of picks as I have been waiting for three months.

I would appreciate if you would send an email to S.H. Wallace and tell them about your experience with me as a representative of their product and other products I have provided. I told them that American Prospectors are not too keen on companies, such as theirs, that are perfectly willing to allow someone to spend time and money to advertise their product and build a client base, just so they can turn around and engage in underhanded tactics such as these. I truly am shocked by this turn of events. I can understand if S.H. Wallace wants to expand their distribution, but to cut me off, when I am the one who has done all the grunt work leaves me speechless. It's not the first time that this has happened to my suppliers. Where certain parties have tried to get them to cut me out, when I'm the one who has imported and advertised the item and made it popular.

G'Day Doc,

Sorry for the delay in answering your email. After carefull consideration we (Walco) will not be able to supply Profile Prospecting with our products. This decision is not personal, but based on situations outside your influence. We have appreciated all past dealings with you. Arizona Outback will be handling some of our products. We wish you and your family health, wealth and peace for the future. Thanks again.
Regards Cliff & Rob.

You can certainly tell S.H. Wallace how you feel. However, please do it in a civil way and refrain from name calling. I think people have a tendency to just sort of tune you out when you start saying unflattering things.

Thanks!

Hey Doc,

I copy and pasted this over on my nuggethunting.com gold forums. I can't believe what I'm reading, but then again I can. Why anyone would consider dropping a distributor that built you an empire in the US is mind-boggling! I know I have sold an easy hundred or so Walco picks, so I'm sure Doc has sold thousands. Hell, he had 400 on backorder and I've personally been waiting on a few larger ones. I guess I now know what was going on behind the scenes. The picks I thought my distributor was going to receive were probably being made for someone else to distribute.

Doc My mom always said "What goes around, comes around." Your day will come. Till then "keep on keeping on" and your business will continue to flourish. Jerry

I would tend to believe that he did. Chris just got back from a trip over there and reported on his forum that he visited and hunted with the Walco people. One could simply chalk it up to "that's business, nothing personal", but this does seem to be a mite underhanded and outside the realms of friendly competitiveness. We in a very small, tight knit community of sportsmen where most know, or know of, each other. I think this will eventually come back to bite someone very hard in the wallet. Minelab pulled something like this a few years ago with Doc and our outraged emails and calls actually did get them to back off and revise their policies. There is a small and tight market for the few dollars we have left to spend on accessories after spending so much on a detector itself.

If not, then I know Doc is much more resourceful than given credit for. He will simply find someone "locally" to produce a better quality product at a cheaper price and then procede to sell thousands of them putting Walco out of business.

I'm with you Doc!

I would love to see someone here in the states make a pick that would eat up the Walco pick alive!!!! Wish I had the time. I have the equipment to heat treat and weld the metal.

Well, Doc, I've been setting back and watching this, and it appears to me that the Walco folks have shot themselves in the foot in the US...They do make a very good pick...I wore out the one I bought from you several years ago...The same design can be done here and I think Shep's approach is excellent...I would think the market just opened up, at least as far as the US is concerned...Go gett'em...Cheers, Ron

G'day, as a relocated Victorian ,now in NorCal..... look for a much better pick coming out of here soon,

Have a great end of April, we are making prototype.

Its a mongrel but hey, what's new in the world the way it is today. Use, take, crush, fool, stooge...its all about the bucks! Sorry to hear you got canned though all the same.
I don't reckon they are that great anyway, all mine have had the handle shrink inside the sleeve and end up being loose. The steel is too springy and I reckon the angle of the digging end is not right. Points inward just a fraction too much. Pretty ordinary really. Over hyped how good they are in my opinion. Get a better tougher one made with better angles. I found too that the straight back edge of the scraper end is not right either. When I had a Walco I used an angle grinder to nick off the sides and angle them in. That made it cut into clay almost twice as good as it did and with less resistance. Have a good one Doc.

I simply said, " we remember things over here"

Remember the Alamo!

That's prettty civil, right?
