VX3 Batteries

VX3 Detector. I was wondering if I could put Energizer rechargeable batteries 2300-mah or higher in the detector instead of paying around $80 for the pack from whites. Thanks

No problem at all. There is no limit on the mah rating of the rechargeable batteries you use. The voltage should stay 12V even though the regulator can handle 14V. ROB

I have the Eneloop 1900Mah rechargeables and like them as they hold 90% of the charge after 6 months (should they be sitting around.) They actually measure at 2100-2200Mah. I use them in the headphones and get around 8 hours or more last ones I charged.

Now, that said I read this post on another forum. If you need a longer running time, this looks like the way to go. Amazing.

Hi My Fellow TH'ers
OK here is what I have been using for the past year or so PowerGenix NiZn 1.6 volt rechargeable AA Batteries. With a full charge I start my search day at 14.4 or 14.6 volts and after a 8 or 10 hour day I end up with 13+ volts. I have never had any Whites rechargeable or alkaline battery last as long. As stated earlier these batteries are 2500 mWh. You cannot use any other charger other than the PowerGenix. You can get them on Ebay or Amazon; you just need to watch the descriptions as they also have AAA and is you don't watch you will end up with AAA instead of AA. You can buy the charger with four batteries or packs of 4 or 8 batteries. I watch my fellow TH'ers swap batteries several times in a days search and I still end up with 13+ volts. I do not use any other batteries any more.
I do wish you all the best of luck as this should not be confusing for anyone.

They aren't as great as he thinks. First they have less power than the 1600mah cells in the original pack. They are rated in mWa not mah. They also have shown a higher failure rate. Also just after charging they are at 1.85v. this could prove a problem with the regulator. 1.85v x 8 = 14.8v. Add to that a new charger, Hmm. You are better off with the Eneloop. Again, anything longer than 8 - 10 hours of hunting time seems like a waste of money. ROB

Rob, I'm going to start calling you "Rob - The Big Brother I never had." :super: You may not use tact but you say what you need to say, just like a big brother. And there is no governmental pun intended.

Thanks for that note regarding the regulator. I didn't think it would be affected as it would cut off Voltage above a certain amount. I can't argue with needing more than 8 hours (unless you use Tx Boost all the time) - I carry around 8 extra duracells just in case. In my non mineralized ground I (if the iron is light) I can EASILY run Rx 15, Disc 95 and Tx Boost on! (Tx boost is a noticeable difference on deep targets here). I just haven't found a place to really do it consistently or with deep targets though.

Thanks again,
EMS

It's not that it will cutoff at 8V, it's that it can only handle so many volts before it burns up, components have a operating ceiling. my comments come from an engineers report on the battery. If it was a better battery type Whites would use them. ROB

See Carl is not questioning the rating. ROB
