Volume limiter

Rob (IL)

New member
Having used my MXT for a month all has been going well except my ears are having a hard time with those shallow targets. They are blowing my ears away. I need information on a limiter(clipper) circuit. Something to limit the maxium sound level. I read something in an older post about this. Who makes them? Rob

I needed to explain better. I need to know which brand"s limiter works with the MXT. I've been readings that some guys have phones and the limiter doesn't work with the MXT's circuitry. Who's phones work and were do I get them? Rob

What you need to do is use a set of Headphones that have a volume control on them so you can adjust your volume to your hearing.
If you want a set of Headphones that have a limiter circuit the original Gray Ghost, some of the Timberwolfs and the Sun Ray Pro have a limiter circuit, but you still need to adjust your headphone with a volume control on the headphones.

I have volume control on my white's phones. I need a set with a limiter that works with the MXT. For instance, the limiter on the killer B's wasp is not suppose to work on the MXT. I need to have the volume up for the small signals but need to limit the maxmium volume on the shallow targets and pin pointing. I've got enough damage from having worked around loud noises. One ringing ear is enough. I also can't buy phones until I find a set that works. Rob

The SunRay Pro are great headphones and have the limiter switch. I also have the Koss made for White's but they are not nearly so durable as the SunRay which seem to have been made by someone that metal detects unlike the Koss which I've had to send in for repair twice.

How does the limiter feature work? Rob

It works pretty good. If you want more, read on.

Think of it as a plateau. Your normal volume control limits the sound level anywhere along the rise to the plateau. Once you get to the plateau the volume will not go any further.

The reason it works so well is because you still have full control of the normal range of volume but get above a certain level and it clamps it so that it cannot go above that value.

I have answered most of the questions you are asking here. If you want to know more go to the SunRay forum http://www.findmall.com/list.php?50 and read some of their postings. If that does not help, start a new post and Ralph (the guy who runs SunRay) will answer anything you want to know.

I worded it badly Lee. I know how a limiter works, I just wanted to have guys with different brands tell me if the limiters on their brand of phones worked well with the MXT. There was a poster that said the limiter on his phones didn't work with the MXT. Monte said he had a set that didn't work on the MXT. So I guess your's work well. How about someone with another brand telling me their also work. Rob

Hi rcasio44,

I've had my MXT for almost a year, and I know exactly what you are describing. When I turned the gain up into the plus area, I had to turn the volume down to avoid blasts on shallow targets. And, by turning the volume down, I was not able to hear the deeper targets.

After a couple of months of this frustration, I purchased a pair of Killer B's Wasps. I am glad I was not told they wouldn't work on an MXT. I am very happy with them. They work great.

I prefer to hunt at +3 with an MXT because that's the maximum Target Volume as well as some audio saturation along with Gain increase.

I guess I bought a pair that never did work right. From day one if I found a large shallow target that was loud, switching the toggle back and forth made no difference in volume. I have to keep volume controls as far down as they will go or my ears will explode while pinpointing. I about have to grit my teeth as it is while pinpointing with volume at the minimum setting.
If someone has a better way for me to test the limiter switch on my Killer B Wasps I'm anxious to try.

Ok thanks for the post. Do the Killer B Wasp work with the MXT or does DPW have a bad set? This is all I want to know. Rob

I just got off the phone with B&B Distributors out of Tuscaloosa AL. I Described the performance of my Killer B Wasp headphones and he seemed to think something was not right. He gave a detailed explanation of how the limiter switch works and told me what the component that is acting up is called. All of which I promptly forgot. He apologized, told me this is very rare, asked me to send them back and they'll get it fixed.
So I thank rcassio44 for bringing up this topic and in turn making me find out if my headphones are working correctly or not.
Included in the info that was sent to me when I bought them is a line stating limiter circuits work best on detectors that have "built in" volume control. Not knowing what this meant I just figured that the MXT was the type that the limiter circuit did not work well with. Even though they cost me $90.00 I was willing to live without the limiter circuit because of how well built they are and how comfortable they are.
With a working limiter circuit I'll be very, very pleased with my Killer B Wasp/MXT combo.

I think the Sun Ray Pros work with no problem on the MXT as those are what my wife was using on her MXT. These are made by Killer Bees, but to Sun Ray spec, which I find slightly better.
I may be giving you a personal message in a day or so on a new set to try of the Sun Ray Pros to see if they will work for you.
