Volume Gain question for SE

Member
I have found that the SE screeches to much at the factory setting for me anyway. I have run it down to 1. I was wondering what other ppl have tried and the result.

I run gain at 8-10. You may want to try turning down your sensitivity. Not sure what you mean by screeches, are you running your SE at factory pre-sets?

Higher. They are both a little noisy at that sen. but, great depth. I always run a little hot anyway to a sen. of 25. The ID got better and the tone was much cleaner and a lot clearer on the targets. I am over here in Jax. Fl. findly seeing the kids and have been beach hunting the last 8 days and really running the SE thru the mill testing it out against my Exp ll. I have found you can run hotter on sen if you cut the gain down some. You can do that on both machines though. Was running sen. at 20 and 22 gain at 8 but, this is a real bad beach over here, targets were not clear on tones or ID. Soon as I dropped the gain down to 6 and ran up the sen. a few spots those deep ones started to come out. I am thru compairing the two machines and I found out what I wanted to know. Now I am having a ball with the SE. No more getting up and down with the probe just pinpoint and target is there no more losing the target and having to probe around trying to find the damn target. ID is dead on in the pinpoint mode on the deep targets. Really helps when you have more then one target in the hole or beside the good target. I really like the faster processor especially in the trash. I also like the pinpoint detune as you can't detune out the target. I have to say I always did like VCO pinpoint and this pinpoint will even tell you if the target is deep or shallow and you don't have to look at the depth meter. Just listen to the audio of the target. I am really glad I got one of the first SE's and never had to listen to the nay sayers. So to answer the question Do I like the SE better then my EXP ll. Answer is yes and a whole lot better then the EXP ll. The up grades was worth it to me. There ain't nothing I hate worse then trying to probe around in a damn hole trying to find a target. I don't have to do that with the SE anymore. Next I am going to play around with the lower Threshold tone and see how that does at the beach and will use the Pitch Hold to see how that does at the beach. Been a long time since I used the Exp. at the beach and I have to retrain myself. Don't even use my vibra probe anymore with the SE. OK said enough HH. Enjoy your SE it is a very good machine. Did I say I love my SE :inlove: Later Jerry aka Tinfoil.

Youre going to love that pitch hold, sounds seem a lot less confusing to me when i use it. My se is still a little slow at recovering from blanking,so if you have any suggestions on how to get it to recover quicker, let me know, I'm already using fast by the way. good luck to you, dont get bit by an alligator while enjoying your 70 degree sunshine, im in the midwest winds 30 mph and 40 degrees, winters coming and i just got my se.

I run in ferrious mode, even with ironmask off I run a blank screen and accept everything. Never did like the nulling. In the dirt I hunt some nasty sites and to get the good stuff you got to hear everything. Never did like the crosshairs. Just learn the numbers. If it is jumping around on the numbers then the cross hairs are jumping around. I also like the larger numbers on the SE better then my EXPll. Ok I am out of here and gone to the beach.. HH :D: :D: Later Jerry aka Tinfoil

I have a number of detectors to play with but I really want to learn the SE. I have a MXT for a backup. I am trying to get my granddaughter in to detecting so I bought a M6 for her to use and a Prism 5 for her to try out. I don't want to confuse myself right now while trying to learn the SE. I do like how light the Prism 5 is. I do want to try out the P5 and M6 but they sit there and I use the SE. You know I buy and sell used machines so I get to play with them if I want. But getting to know your personal machine is the most important thing to do whatever machine it is. Sometimes I wish I only had one machine not the 10 I have presently. The two I like most are the SE and MXT.

I must be really dense I never made the connection between volume gain and sensitivity. I was just trying to turn down the volume some. As I mentioned in another post the factory setting seem really loud to me very shrill. I have high end hearing lose ( according to my wife) so if the high end sounds are bothering me they must be loud enough to hurt what is left of it. I went to a gain of 1 which I liked but seems a bit flat and will be working it up until good targets have a nice "hey! here I am sound." The problem with sound is it is all subjective to our own perspective and problems I guess. Just trying to understand the best I can.

Yeah the MXT I got from you is really good & I like it a lot but it does take a LITTLE getting used to...I've since got the little shooter coil & it is a definite keeper....I got the 6x10 yesterday & am going out this AM to give it a go....keep me posted on how you like the SE...I have your email & will drop you a line later today...Tom

I really like that little shooter coil how it gets the depth it does is amazing to me. I just got a Excelerator 4.5 by 7 for the SE havn't had a chance to use it but I am hoping it has the depth ratio compared to the stock coil that the shooter does.
