Volume control adjustment on the Sovereign GT.

For many years I have run my GT at full volume and adjusted the loudness via headphones. Recently having my GT volume control accidently set at 3 o'clock, I noticed a better "sweetness" to the audio. It was as if the separation between target id tones was "tighter".
I didn't notice any depth loss but I haven't gone over any deep seated dimes to my knowledge lately.
I am just looking for users opinion of the audio seeming more discernible between targets with the GT volume set lower than max. And does the depth of the GT take that much of a hit with the volume control on the machine is set lower?

Thanks in advance.

Ive always been under the impression that the volume control is equal to depth and I believe that to be true.. i use to set my volume at about 3/4 volume on both gt and excal but ive gotten into the habit of cranking it up full volume.. it's certainty possible you are getting cleaner signals because the coil isnt scanning quite as much ground thus reducing masking from other debris in the soil.. for years i mostly hunted in band 1,iron mask on,and i got great depth and made many great finds but now i find myself going back to those same worked out spots but now i hunt in band 2,iron mask off and sometimes automatic sensetivity which in my opinion gives better separation as i can get good signal response with a slower than normal swing speed..i find these settings work good in heavy iron areas... finding the optimal settings for current hunting conditions. .. thats why when things get quiet i start tinkering with settings. ..happy hunting. .

Thank you for your input .
I appreciate it.

The volume control on all Sovereigns must be at the max to get depth. This control is actually miss labeled, which its really a gain control. HH Ron

Rick, by mistake I've gone out and forgot to turn the volume control up to the max, doesn't take long in the field to figure this problem out, when a Sovereign is struggling to find shallow targets, sad. I make it a priority to check the volume control and that it is in max position before searching. The Elite has these knobs switched in reverse order from the GT which can create this problem. Not sure why Minelab calls this a volume control, most new users think their volume control doesn't work and don't understand it operates the gain. Thanks Ron

I done the same thing myself and not turning the volume control to max only to see after swing it and getting a target or 2 you know something is not right. With the Elite one of the reason I didnt like this one was as you say the control were different and confused a person once in a while plus after using the older Sovereigns I felt the tones were weaker sounding like deeper only to see they were not that deep.
I now have a Equinox coming on Monday they say and when the weather gets good to get out I will be able to see if it can do as well as my Sovereign GT and hope it can do better, but it going to be hard to beat the Sovereign as many that know this detector will tell you and we can only hope. The Equinox is much lighter, easy to swing and if it can find those deep coins and ID them plus get coins with nails like the Sovereign can it will be a winner.

Jason,

I can't answer your first question but I can answer the last.

And does the depth of the GT take that much of a hit with the volume control on the machine is set lower?

When I first started using the Sov GT I didn't turn my volume to max (had it set around the 12 O'clock position) and noticed I wasn't finding items deeper than 4". I then spoke to Master Sovereign Kung fu expert RickND and he explained to crank the volume to max and adjust the volume on my headphones. I picked up a set of Sunray Pro Golds and followed RickND instructions. Sure enough once I started hunting with volume at Max (and adjusting my headphone volume to a comfortable level) is when I started finding the deep targets.

Interesting discovery though on lessening the volume. I have hearing loss so I don't know if I will be able to hear this small difference you are speaking of.

Hope you are ok in Mass after this storm we just had. Hopefully you can get to the beach and make some nice finds!
