Vista X / First Hunt

Thanks Richard. Enjoyed the video. I agree the X audio is very informative once you learn what it's trying to tell you.

I also found the Gold Gain audio to be similar, as I learned yesterday at an 1830-50s tavern site. For iron targets, sometimes I get a response that moves from a "good quick sharp" sound to an
iron grunt as I sweep over it and it is always iron when I dig it. But once yesterday it was a "good" "rounder/smoother" sound just before the iron sound. I was going to pass it by and not dig it but thought
to myself how surprised I was to get the iron grunt following that initial sound. It sounded like it was going to be "good" target but was interrupted by the iron sound. I dug it and it was a military button circa 1840-50s mixed with a bunch of iron.

I really like using the GG in one-tone (non-ferrous only) mode. I tried two tone mode but in the heavy iron site it was quite noisy. Using one-tone allowed me to hear the various fluctuations within the tone as I passed over targets.
I was amazed how accurately I was identifying non-ferrous targets before digging them. I'm really enjoying the X and GG at my older sites that do not have a lot of modern trash.

Now if I could only learn to differentiate between can-slaw, pull-tabs and coins in one-tone mode.

I think that the audio is more definitive on the Vista X than any of the previous Vistas. What I listen for is a good high tone even if there a low tone. The Smart Plus is good about giving "double audio" at the same time. If definition is there, dig it, regardless of the low tone. Sometimes, cutting the iron audio back will add to the evaluation of the high tones.. Can slaw can be hard to eliminate but you miss a lot if you don't dig it. A friend of mine took another gentleman relic hunting, his first time. They parked and he went across the fence so as to not dig all the beer cans. Meanwhile, the novice, started digging beer cans. His 5-6 dig was a CS plate. To get the better targets, we have to dig some bad non-ferrous targets. (About 1985, I was set up at a relic show and the novice showed up with his plate and one of the well known collectors, appraised it a $2500).HH Richard

More than many the X has a lot to tell you. Like most machines you got to be patient and put in the hours. Lots of things to do to help yourself. Like raising the coil on a target too good to be true. Nothing beats putting in the time and trying to understand what it's telling you. Richard your right about hitting a iffy target and trying a different angle. After a little confidence, it's fun to try and /call/ the target before digging. Just keeping things honest. After digging many clad coins I swear the dime can be called over the quarter in most cases. I've checked the X many time when its saying Trash. Don't bet against it.
What's fun about Analog machines is it gives the hunter something to do other then just follow the coil around. They make you detect and analyse making you challenge yourself. Looking at videos is hunting threw someone else's eyes, always something to learn. Good job.
