............yes, my friends, I haven't been here much lately because it's too cold to go canoeing & also metal detect -- therefore, not much to post lately. Anyway.......my son Randy & I visited the Memorial Ceremony of a hero that was captured on film as a Iwo Jima Flagraiser during Rosenthal's famous photo. Franklin Sousley, ( 2nd from the left in pic) was born & raised in Fleming Co Ky, about 40 miles from where we live. Every year on the Sunday closest to Feb 23 ( the day of the actual flag raising ) ...the local VFW holds a remembrance service. Some of the remaining Sousley family was on hand at the service too.

You can read more about Sousley & the other flag raisers below:

Here are the Marine vets raising the colors on this very cold afternoon......

The locals has put a very neat Monument of this hero. On the reverse side of the monument are the other flag raiser names involved with this photo.
Below are some of the Iwo Jima survivors of that time period.......

Taps was played by the fellow with the bagpipes on the left as the honorary gun salute was being prepped.....

We were proud to attend this event along with about 100 others. I never had the opportunity to serve as the Vietnam War was over while I was in high school.......however......I am proud to say to all veterans reading this:

Thank you for your service to our country.

It is YOU that allows all of us to go metal detecting & do all the others things we enjoy living in America.

Thank you.

Enjoy...............see ya yardhunter
